African assistive technology accelerator Innovate Now has officially announced its eleventh cohort, welcoming 19 innovative ventures to its program. These startups are focused on developing groundbreaking solutions across AI-powered accessibility, mobility, inclusive education, and digital inclusion. The new cohort represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to address the needs of persons with disabilities on the continent.
A Strategic Selection Process
The selection process for this cohort was notably dynamic, combining two distinct recruitment channels to identify promising innovators. Ten of the ventures emerged from an intensive AI for Accessibility Hackathon, where solutions were conceptualized and built in under 72 hours. The remaining nine startups were carefully chosen through a competitive open call, ensuring a diverse and high-potential group of founders.
Fostering Innovation Through Incubation
The 19 selected founders will now embark on a comprehensive eight-month incubation program designed to accelerate their growth. This journey includes hands-on coaching, dedicated mentorship from industry experts, and a curriculum focused on sustainable business development. A core component involves continuous user testing with persons with disabilities, facilitated by Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa to ensure product-market fit.
The cohort showcases a remarkable diversity of technological solutions tailored to specific needs within the disability community. Ventures such as CoreGuard Mobility and Orienta are tackling mobility challenges, while AuraLearn and SomaSoma AI focus on inclusive education. Others like BlackRhino VR and Gala are pioneering new frontiers in digital inclusion, demonstrating the broad scope of innovation being nurtured.
An Ecosystem of Support
Innovate Now operates within a robust ecosystem of strategic partners committed to disability innovation. The program is implemented by the Assistive Technologies for Disability Trust (AT4D) in collaboration with Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa (KBTA). It also stands as a flagship accelerator of the globally recognized Global Disability Innovation Hub, reinforcing its international credibility and reach.
The accelerator's mission is sustained by significant international support, currently backed by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). Bernard Chiira, founder and CEO of AT4D, expressed his enthusiasm for the new cohort and its potential. "We are excited to work alongside these innovators as they build promising solutions that will drive meaningful impact," he stated.
Pathway to Market Impact
The intensive incubation period will culminate in a highly anticipated Demo Day, a capstone event for the cohort. This showcase provides a critical platform for the founders to present their market-ready solutions to a curated audience. It connects them with potential investors, strategic partners, and key stakeholders from across the global disability innovation ecosystem.
The launch of Innovate Now's eleventh cohort marks a pivotal moment for the African assistive technology landscape. By nurturing these 19 ventures, the program is not only fostering individual startups but also strengthening the entire ecosystem for disability inclusion. The solutions developed over the next eight months hold the promise of delivering tangible, life-changing impact for communities across the continent.
