Immortal Dragons, a US$40 million purpose-driven longevity fund, announced a strategic investment in Renewal Bio, an Israeli regenerative medicine company developing patient-matched human cells for transplantation. Renewal Bio was founded in 2022 as a spinout of the Weizmann Institute of Science. The financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.
The Challenge of Donor-Dependent Transplants
Most transplantable cells currently come from donors, and patients who need bone marrow transplants must find immune-compatible matches while still facing rejection risks and long-term immunosuppression. Cells derived from a patient's own stem cells would eliminate the need for a donor match. Laboratory methods have struggled, however, to produce cells that behave like natural ones.
How Renewal Bio's Platform Works
Renewal Bio's Stembroid platform starts by reprogramming ordinary skin or blood cells into stem cells. It then allows those stem cells to self-organize into a three-dimensional model of early human development without using sperm or eggs. Inside this model, target cell types emerge through natural developmental cues rather than being forced into shape by chemical instructions in a dish.
Scientific Foundations and Milestones
The technology originates from the laboratory of Professor Jacob Hanna at the Weizmann Institute, who is Renewal Bio's co-founder and chief scientific advisor. Over the past decade, the Hanna lab has reported results in Nature, Cell, and Cell Stem Cell. The lab grew mouse embryos outside the uterus through the stage of organ formation and built both mouse and human embryo models entirely from stem cells.
Advancing Embryo-Model Research
In 2025, the laboratory generated mouse embryo models without any genetic modification, marking another advance for the field. Renewal Bio holds an exclusive license to the platform from the Weizmann Institute of Science. These scientific milestones support the company's goal of producing patient-matched cells at scale and at higher volumes.
A Replacement Strategy for Healthy Lifespan
The investment reflects Immortal Dragons' Replacement Strategy thesis, which holds that replacing aged or failing tissues is one of the most direct paths to extending healthy life. The limiting factor for replacement is cell supply, and Renewal Bio is working to remove that constraint. Boyang Wang, founder of Immortal Dragons, said cell supply is the bottleneck for replacement and Renewal Bio is addressing it with some of the most important science in the embryo-model field.
Clinical and Commercial Significance
Renewal Bio's approach could eventually provide an alternative to donor-derived transplants for hematologic and other diseases. The company is advancing a platform that may reduce immune rejection and expand access to cell replacement therapies. Its progress is being closely watched by longevity investors and regenerative medicine developers around the world.
Looking Ahead
Immortal Dragons intends to support Renewal Bio as it continues preclinical development and scales its Stembroid platform. The investment is expected to help accelerate research, expand laboratory capabilities, and move the technology toward future clinical applications. Renewal Bio has not announced specific timelines for human trials at this early stage.
The strategic investment in Renewal Bio highlights growing investor interest in regenerative medicine as a route to healthier aging. By targeting the cell supply bottleneck, the company aims to transform transplantation from a donor-dependent process into a patient-specific one. With foundational science from the Weizmann Institute, Renewal Bio is positioning itself at the center of longevity-focused innovation.
