HAMR Energy has secured up to AUD $32 million in conditional funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) for a landmark sustainable aviation fuel project. The initiative will convert plantation forestry residues into low-carbon liquid fuels, aiming to decarbonize the difficult-to-abate aviation sector. This marks the first investment from the government's Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund dedicated to fostering a domestic clean fuels industry.
A Strategic Investment in Sustainable Aviation
The government's financial commitment is structured in two phases to ensure project viability. ARENA will initially provide $12.5 million for engineering and development work across the supply chain. A further $19.5 million is allocated for the detailed Front-End Engineering Design stage, contingent on HAMR Energy securing the necessary co-funding.
ARENA CEO Darren Miller highlighted the project's potential to accelerate Australia’s emerging SAF industry. He noted aviation is a challenging sector to decarbonize, and SAF provides a practical near-term solution. This investment will help validate the commercial and technical foundations for converting biomass into valuable clean fuels at scale.
Project Scope and Economic Impact
The project will establish an integrated supply chain from Victoria to South Australia. It plans to process approximately 600,000 tonnes of forestry byproducts annually, sourced from the Green Triangle region. This biomass will be converted into around 300,000 tonnes of low-carbon methanol as a precursor for the final fuel products.
At the heart of the operation is Australia’s first large-scale methanol-to-jet SAF refinery, proposed for Port Adelaide. This facility is projected to produce approximately 140 million litres of SAF each year. In addition to aviation fuel, the refinery will also generate renewable diesel and other valuable low-carbon fuels.
The development is poised to deliver significant economic benefits and job creation. Hundreds of construction jobs are anticipated during the building phase, with more than 200 ongoing roles created once operational. The project will also stimulate growth in regional supply chains, including forestry, engineering, and advanced manufacturing.
Enhancing Fuel Security and Environmental Goals
A key strategic goal of the initiative is to bolster Australia’s national fuel security. By establishing a sovereign domestic production capability for low-carbon liquid fuels, the project reduces the nation's reliance on imported fuels. This move enhances Australia's resilience against volatile global energy markets and potential supply chain disruptions.
The environmental advantages of the project are substantial, directly addressing climate change goals. The SAF produced is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 85 percent compared to conventional fossil-based jet fuel. This translates to an annual abatement of around 330,000 tonnes of CO2, a significant step towards cleaner aviation.
HAMR Energy Co-Founder David Stribley called the funding a significant milestone for building a competitive domestic SAF industry. He stated the project combines Australian forestry residues, renewable energy, and proven technologies to deliver lower-emissions fuel. Stribley emphasized the project's potential to create skilled jobs while strengthening national fuel security and reducing emissions.
