Detroit-based mobility and advanced manufacturing company Grounded has raised $5 million in seed financing and is expanding production into a new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the city. The move is expected to increase the company’s production capacity by 1,900% as it responds to growing demand from commercial and municipal fleet customers. Grounded will also use the expansion to introduce a vehicle-agnostic box platform designed to extend its modular architecture beyond its existing electric van and recreational vehicle products.

Funding Supports Manufacturing Expansion

Grounded plans to direct the new funding toward manufacturing equipment, tooling, research and development, and the buildout of its larger Detroit facility. Part of the capital will also support hiring across manufacturing, engineering, and sales as the company works to increase production and reach more fleet customers. The new facility represents a significant scale-up for Grounded, which has evolved from its initial focus on electric recreational vehicles into a broader commercial mobility business.

The company said production at the expanded Detroit site will begin in August 2026, with manufacturing capacity expected to increase further through 2027. Grounded intends to use the additional space to meet existing customer commitments while developing and producing its new box platform. The expansion is also expected to support growing demand from enterprise organizations, government agencies, and municipal fleet operators.

New Platform Targets Broader Fleet Market

Grounded’s upcoming box platform builds on the modular and software-defined architecture already used across its van-based electric vehicles. The system is designed to allow a common vehicle platform to be configured for different commercial applications without requiring the company to develop a completely new vehicle for each customer. Grounded says this approach could reduce manufacturing complexity while giving fleet operators greater flexibility to customize vehicles for specialized use cases.

Unlike Grounded’s earlier products, the new platform is intended to work across both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles. This broader compatibility gives the company access to a larger commercial fleet market while allowing customers to adopt its modular manufacturing technology regardless of powertrain. Grounded sees potential demand from sectors including food and beverage services, public safety, mobile healthcare, field operations, and other businesses that rely on purpose-built vehicles.

Commercial Fleet Adoption Grows

Grounded has already deployed vehicles with a range of corporate, institutional, and service-sector customers. Organizations using its vehicles include Colgate, Nokia, Coffee Fellows, Wayne State University Medical, PetEvolution, and Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies. Existing applications span mobile healthcare and dental services, food operations, and other activities requiring customized mobile workspaces.

The company plans to continue producing fully electric recreational vehicles for individual consumers while placing greater emphasis on commercial and government fleets. Founder and CEO Sam Shapiro said the larger manufacturing operation will allow Grounded to serve fleet customers at a scale that was previously difficult to achieve. The company’s strategy centers on combining adaptable vehicle construction with connected technology that can support remote monitoring and fleet management.

Expanding Operations in Detroit

Grounded is also strengthening its commercial team as it prepares for the next stage of growth. The company recently appointed Drew Snow, formerly of Adrian Steel, as Director of International Sales to help expand the fleet business and pursue opportunities in additional markets. The manufacturing expansion is expected to create 15 new jobs while further establishing Grounded’s operations in Detroit.

The company originally emerged from Detroit-based innovation campus Newlab and has maintained its manufacturing presence in the city as it has grown. Grounded said local economic development support helped connect the company with resources needed to secure the larger facility and keep its expanding operations in Detroit. The new site positions the company to increase output while continuing to develop its modular manufacturing and connected vehicle technologies.

Grounded’s $5 million seed round and manufacturing expansion mark a shift toward significantly larger-scale commercial fleet production. With a 50,000-square-foot Detroit facility, a new vehicle-agnostic box platform, and additional hiring, the company is preparing to serve a wider range of enterprise and public-sector transportation needs. Its next phase will test whether its modular approach can translate from electric RVs and vans into a scalable manufacturing platform for a broader commercial vehicle market.
