GreenPay, an impact payments platform, has secured the top prize of a AUD $50,000 grant at Taronga’s annual Hatch accelerator program. Co-founded by Maddi Ingham and Glenn Bartlett, the startup enables businesses to embed environmental action into everyday transactions. The win highlights a growing movement to integrate conservation funding directly into the economy, championed by programs like Hatch.

Fostering Environmental Innovation

Now in its sixth year, the Taronga Hatch accelerator is a 14-week program designed to support emerging ecopreneurs. With backing from partners like LG, it provides a crucial launchpad for startups focused on environmental and conservation solutions. The initiative helps founders transform their innovative ideas into tangible, market-ready realities through mentorship and resources.

Each of the five startups in this year's cohort received $2,000 in equity-free seed funding and an LG product pack valued at $3,000. Taronga Conservation Society Australia CEO Cameron Kerr praised the founders for presenting thoughtful and scalable solutions to pressing environmental challenges. This foundational support is critical for early-stage ventures aiming to make a significant positive impact on the planet.

GreenPay's Vision for Embedded Sustainability

GreenPay offers a simple yet powerful platform for businesses to contribute to conservation with every payment processed. This model directly addresses the chronic underfunding of environmental projects, which receive only a fraction of the necessary financial support. By making sustainability an affordable and practical part of daily commerce, GreenPay aims to make nature a beneficiary of every transaction.

Co-founder Maddi Ingham expressed immense pride in the win, calling the program an inspiring experience that will help grow the company's impact. One judge noted that GreenPay's projected growth could potentially generate enough funds to support all the projects presented at the event. This powerful endorsement underscores the scalability and transformative potential of the startup's innovative business model.

A Cohort of Dedicated Changemakers

Alongside GreenPay, the 2024 cohort featured four other promising startups dedicated to environmental preservation. Bruny Island Seafarms is pioneering regenerative aquaculture in Tasmania, while Ludis is transforming end-of-life tennis balls into sustainable shoe materials. Additionally, Plante is creating biodegradable nursery pots from food waste, and Kraken Systems is developing non-harmful shark bite prevention technology.

The program also recognized the achievements of other participants with special awards. Plante earned the People’s Choice Award, and Bruny Island Seafarms received the LG Life’s Good Award for their respective contributions. Both startups were awarded a $5,000 prize, celebrating the diverse and impactful solutions developed across the entire cohort.

The success of the latest Taronga Hatch program demonstrates the vital role of accelerators in nurturing solutions for global environmental crises. By empowering startups like GreenPay, the initiative is fostering a new generation of businesses where profit and purpose coexist. The collective impact of these ecopreneurs promises a more sustainable future, driven by innovation and a shared commitment to conservation.
