GotoAI Inc. announced the official release of Kari, a desktop AI assistant designed to work directly with browser content and local files, on September 21, 2026. The application runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and supports everyday tasks such as summarization, translation, draft creation, and data analysis. Users can operate Kari with existing Anthropic Claude or OpenAI ChatGPT subscriptions, avoiding separate API metered billing.
Closing the Workplace AI Gap
GotoAI developed Kari to address the gap between rapidly improving generative AI capabilities and practical workplace adoption. Many employees already pay for personal AI subscriptions but face additional API charges when accessing AI through business tools. Important information also often remains locked in local folders and legacy web systems that lack modern interfaces such as APIs or Model Context Protocol.
Core Capabilities and Automation
Kari can control its built-in browser to search, navigate, download, and read screen contents automatically. This allows users to collect and analyze information from public systems that do not provide web APIs or MCP support. Documented use cases include searching parliamentary records, gathering court decision PDFs, analyzing government statistics, reviewing public social media opinion, and automating repeated downloads.
Local File Work and Semantic Search
Kari is designed to read files users already have open, removing the need for repeated uploads or pasting into chat windows. It can summarize and translate PDF, Word, and PowerPoint documents while preserving slide layouts for translations. The assistant also creates PowerPoint drafts, builds flowcharts, aggregates and visualizes Excel data, and performs meaning-based semantic searches across local folders.
Subscription Integration and Flexible Providers
Users authenticate through official Anthropic or OpenAI sign-in screens, and Kari does not receive, store, or relay credentials or tokens. Because it runs the Anthropic official Claude Code agent without modification, usage is counted under the user's own plan, with no resale or brokerage by GotoAI. The platform also includes more than 70 pre-registered AI providers, supports custom connections to local large language models, and can connect to internal AI infrastructure for confidential data operations.
Licensing and Platform Support
Kari is available under community and enterprise licenses, and it supports Windows 10 or 11, macOS 12 and later, and Ubuntu or Debian Linux. The community license is free for individuals and organizations with fewer than 100 employees, while larger organizations can evaluate the product for up to 60 days at no cost. The enterprise license applies to continued use beyond that period for organizations with 100 or more employees, with pricing available on request.
Future Roadmap
GotoAI plans to strengthen retrieval augmented generation features so internal documents can be used as organizational knowledge. The company will also expand data platform integration and analytical functions. Kari will be combined with the OumiGo GPU package to support fully domestic AI solutions in Japan that keep sensitive data from leaving the country.
Kari positions AI not as a distant autonomous agent but as a nearby assistant that works with the files and screens users are already using. Its community license removes common cost and integration barriers for individuals and small teams. GotoAI notes that Kari is a derivative of the open source goose project under Apache License 2.0 and is an independent product without endorsement from the Agentic AI Foundation, The Linux Foundation, or Block, Inc.
