Australian aerospace leader Gilmour Space has announced a significant addition to its leadership team, appointing former NASA Deputy Administrator Pamela Melroy to its Board of Directors. This strategic move brings a wealth of experience from one of the most respected figures in the global space industry to the Queensland-based scaleup. Melroy's appointment signals a new phase of growth as the company aims to expand its international presence and solidify its capabilities.

Decades of Aerospace Expertise

Colonel (Ret.) Melroy brings over three decades of distinguished leadership across civil, defence, and commercial aerospace sectors. As a retired US Air Force Colonel and former astronaut, she is one of only two women to have ever commanded a Space Shuttle mission. Her most recent role as Deputy Administrator of NASA saw her guiding the agency through a period of substantial innovation and expansion.

Her appointment follows that of former Citibank executive Paco Ybarra, further strengthening the board's international business acumen. This trend highlights Gilmour's strategy of assembling a world-class leadership team to navigate its ambitious scaling plans. The combined expertise is set to guide the company's launch, satellite, and spaceport operations in a competitive global market.

Advancing Australia's Space Ambitions

In a statement, Melroy expressed her excitement about joining the company at a pivotal moment in its journey. She praised Gilmour Space for its willingness to tackle the most challenging aspects of the sector, from launch vehicles to essential ground infrastructure. Melroy noted that building these capabilities requires patience, technical excellence, and a strong long-term commitment from the team.

Gilmour Space is at the forefront of developing Australia's sovereign space capabilities, a mission Melroy believes is critical. The company designs, manufactures, tests, and launches its own rockets and satellites from Australian soil. This vertically integrated approach is crucial as access to space becomes increasingly vital for economic growth, technological leadership, and national security.

A Unicorn's Path to Orbit

Founded in 2013 by brothers Adam and James Gilmour, the Gold Coast company has seen remarkable growth. It recently achieved unicorn status with a valuation exceeding $1 billion following a successful $217 million Series E funding round. This significant capital injection was co-led by the National Reconstruction Fund and existing backer Hostplus, underscoring strong investor confidence.

Adam Gilmour, the company's CEO, emphasized the value Melroy brings as they enter their next growth phase. He stated that her experience across government, defence, and commercial space will be "invaluable" for their expansion plans. Gilmour expressed his pride in welcoming her to the board to help guide the company's future endeavors.

The company's flagship project is the 23-metre Eris orbital rocket, which made its first launch attempt last year. Gilmour Space also operates the Bowen Orbital Spaceport in North Queensland, Australia's first licensed orbital launch site. These assets position the company as a key player in the domestic and international launch market for commercial and government missions.

The appointment of Pamela Melroy to the Gilmour Space board is a clear indicator of the company's ambitious global strategy. Her unparalleled expertise will be instrumental in navigating the complexities of the international aerospace industry and reinforcing Australia's sovereign capabilities. As Gilmour Space continues to develop its launch services and satellite technology, this strategic leadership addition positions it for sustained success.
