Sanja Fidler, a former head of Nvidia’s Toronto AI lab, has launched Veeda AI, a new startup focused on transforming robotics. The company, co-founded with former Nvidia colleagues, aims to build simulated realities for training Physical AI. Veeda AI has secured an impressive $90 million in seed funding to pursue its ambitious mission.
A New Venture in Physical AI
Fidler is joined by longtime collaborators Zan Gojcic as CTO and Huan Ling as Chief Scientist, forming a team with deep expertise. They believe the next major advancement in robotics will come from machines learning through direct interaction with their environment. This shared conviction spurred the creation of Veeda AI to build the necessary infrastructure for this evolution.
The primary challenge Veeda addresses is the impracticality of training robots exclusively in the real world. Real-world trial-and-error learning is often unsafe, prohibitively expensive, and incredibly time-consuming for complex tasks. To achieve scalable interactive learning, a more efficient and controlled training ground is fundamentally required for the industry.
The 'Matrix' for Robots
Veeda's solution is to construct a "simulated reality," a concept the company likens to building "the Matrix" for robots. Within these virtual environments, an AI can learn through countless iterations of trial and error without physical consequences. This method mirrors how humans learn and is essential for unlocking the full potential of Physical AI systems.
The technological foundation for this simulated reality lies in what are known as "world models." These sophisticated generative models are trained on massive amounts of sensor and physical-world data. Their purpose is to generate virtual environments with the quality, diversity, and physical realism that robots need for effective training.
Significant Financial Backing and Vision
The startup's ambitious vision has attracted significant investment, securing $90 million USD in a seed round. The funding was co-led by Toronto-based Radical Ventures and Silicon Valley’s Khosla Ventures. This substantial backing underscores strong investor confidence in the founding team and their approach to solving a core robotics challenge.
Fidler envisions Veeda's technology becoming the critical infrastructure layer for the entire robotics industry. The company aims to push the frontiers of generative AI and simulation to build a foundational platform for interactive learning. This will enable robust evaluation and training of robotic systems at an unprecedented scale across various sectors.
Veeda AI enters the market with a clear and transformative goal to redefine how robots learn and interact with the world. By developing sophisticated simulated realities powered by world models, the company aims to overcome the physical limitations of real-world training. With substantial funding and a veteran team, Veeda is positioned to build the foundational infrastructure for the next generation of Physical AI.
