Former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has officially launched Entire, a new company poised to redefine the software development lifecycle for the age of artificial intelligence. The venture makes a powerful entrance with a landmark $60 million seed funding round, reportedly the largest ever for a developer tool startup. Entire’s mission is to build the world's next developer platform, creating a collaborative environment where AI agents and human developers can build and ship software together seamlessly.

A New Paradigm for Software Development

The fundamental motivation for Entire stems from the belief that current development systems are cracking under the pressure of AI. With agents from Anthropic, OpenAI, and others generating code at an unprecedented rate, the traditional, human-centric workflow is becoming obsolete. Dohmke emphasizes that this system was never designed for a world where machines are the primary producers, necessitating a complete reimagining of the process from the ground up.

Entire's founder compares this pivotal moment to the industrial revolution in manufacturing, where the craft-based system was replaced by the moving assembly line for mass production. In the same vein, the company aims to create an "assembly line for the era of agents," establishing a new standard for software creation. This new system is designed to manage the massive scale and speed of AI-driven development, which current tools like Git were not built to handle alone.

Securing Landmark Seed Funding

Fueling this ambitious undertaking is a record-breaking $60 million seed investment that places the company's valuation at $300 million. The round was led by Felicis, with significant participation from a consortium of top-tier investors including Madrona, Microsoft's M12, Basis Set, and 20VC. This substantial financial backing from both institutional and individual investors, such as Datadog CEO Olivier Pomel and former Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, signals strong market confidence in Entire's vision.

Introducing Checkpoints: The First Step

As its first public release, Entire has introduced an open-source command-line tool called Checkpoints, which addresses the critical issue of lost context in AI coding. Currently, the prompts, constraints, and iterative reasoning that lead to AI-generated code are ephemeral, disappearing once a session ends. Checkpoints makes this context durable by automatically capturing it as first-class, versioned data linked directly to the corresponding Git commit.

The tool operates by creating a structured checkpoint object for each agent-generated commit and storing this metadata in a separate branch. This process provides a complete, append-only audit log of the agent's reasoning without altering the primary codebase, enhancing traceability and simplifying code reviews. The initial release supports Anthropic's Claude Code and Google Gemini, with plans to integrate with other major coding agents like Codex and Cursor soon.

The Vision for an AI-Native Platform

While immediately useful, Checkpoints is just the foundational layer of Entire's long-term strategy to build a universal semantic reasoning layer for agents. This layer is one of three key components of the future platform, alongside a git-compatible database and an AI-native software development lifecycle. Ultimately, the goal is to create a shared memory that allows different agents to coordinate, hand off tasks, and build complex software together without collision or loss of understanding.

Led by a seasoned industry veteran and backed by significant capital, Entire is making a bold move to build the essential infrastructure for the future of software engineering. By tackling the challenges of AI-generated code head-on, the company is not just creating a new tool but is aiming to establish an entirely new ecosystem for development. The launch of Checkpoints is a promising first step toward a future where human oversight and agent-driven production merge into a powerful, efficient, and collaborative workflow.
