Flutterwave, a leading African payments technology company, has announced a strategic partnership with financial infrastructure provider Caliza to enhance global payment access for businesses across the continent. This collaboration will provide Flutterwave's customers with dedicated USD accounts and direct connectivity to international payment rails. The initiative aims to dismantle long-standing financial barriers, empowering African enterprises to operate more efficiently within the global economy by simplifying cross-border transactions.

Addressing Cross-Border Payment Hurdles

For years, African businesses have contended with significant challenges when conducting international transactions, primarily due to limited access to hard currencies like the US dollar. This scarcity of USD liquidity often creates processing delays that can last for days, leading to settlement uncertainty and higher operational costs. These persistent issues have created a considerable bottleneck, hindering the ability of companies to reliably engage in global commerce.

Furthermore, accessing US payment infrastructure directly has traditionally been a complex and expensive endeavor for companies based in markets like Nigeria and South Africa. The process typically requires establishing a legal entity in the United States and navigating rigorous onboarding procedures. This structural barrier has effectively excluded many businesses from obtaining the USD accounts necessary for seamless international trade and operations.

A Modernized Financial Infrastructure

Through its partnership with Caliza, Flutterwave is introducing a unified solution that integrates essential financial services into a single platform. Customers can now access dedicated USD accounts in their own name, which are connected to domestic and international payment rails including ACH, Fedwire, RTP, and SWIFT. This entire payment flow is managed programmatically through a single API, allowing Flutterwave to maintain full control over the customer experience.

A key innovation of this partnership is the use of dollar-backed stablecoins such as USDC and USDT to power international transactions. This approach reduces dependence on the often-congested correspondent banking system, resulting in faster, more transparent, and more cost-effective payment flows. By leveraging stablecoins, the solution provides businesses with end-to-end visibility into each transaction, a marked improvement over traditional methods.

Scalability for Business and Treasury

The new infrastructure is designed to support a wide spectrum of transaction volumes, accommodating the diverse needs of Flutterwave's clientele. It can seamlessly process recurring lower-value payments for retail remittances, payroll, and supplier invoices, as well as large treasury movements exceeding one million dollars. This versatility ensures that businesses of all sizes can scale their international operations without encountering fragmented payment workflows.

Beyond serving its customers, the platform also bolsters Flutterwave's own internal treasury operations. The company can now more efficiently manage its USD and stablecoin balances, fund operating accounts across multiple markets, and move large-value positions between liquidity reserves and custody platforms. This capability is crucial for maintaining liquidity and operational stability as the company continues to grow its network and transaction volumes.

Olugbenga “GB” Agboola, CEO of Flutterwave, highlighted the customer-centric vision behind the partnership. “We wanted to give African businesses access to global payment infrastructure without passing that complexity on to them,” he stated. “Caliza allows us to combine a broad range of financial services, currencies, and payment rails within a single infrastructure layer while maintaining control over the customer experience.”

Ultimately, the collaboration between Flutterwave and Caliza marks a significant step toward integrating African businesses more deeply into the global commercial landscape. By providing a modern, unified infrastructure for accounts, payments, and treasury management, the partnership directly addresses critical financial friction points. This move is poised to unlock new opportunities, enhance operational efficiency, and foster greater economic growth for enterprises across Africa.
