Finnish DefenceTech specialist Sensofusion has announced its strategic acquisition of aircraft manufacturer Atol Aviation, launching a new division named Sensofusion Aviation. This move signals a significant expansion for the Helsinki-based anti-drone company, integrating advanced aircraft manufacturing capabilities into its portfolio. The acquisition positions Sensofusion to develop and market sophisticated air-to-ground surveillance systems, enhancing its offerings for governmental and security clients worldwide.

A Strategic Leap into Airborne Surveillance

The acquisition provides Sensofusion with critical expertise in both manned and unmanned aircraft production, substantially increasing its manufacturing capacity. This vertical integration is designed to bolster the company's ability to conduct comprehensive air-to-ground sensor reconnaissance missions. By controlling the aircraft platform, Sensofusion can now deliver fully integrated surveillance solutions manufactured at a former Finnish Air Force base in Halli, Finland.

According to Tuomas Rasila, founder and CEO of Sensofusion, this expansion is a natural evolution for the company. He noted that many clients already deploy their flagship AIRFENCE system on helicopters, aircraft, and drones. Rasila emphasized that achieving signal dominance requires an aerial component, as radio transmitters are more effectively detected from the air.

Combining Finnish Defence and Aviation Expertise

Founded in 2016, Sensofusion has established itself as a key player in developing next-generation solutions for drone detection and signals intelligence. Its primary product, AIRFENCE, is a passive detection system that provides real-time location data for both drones and their pilots. The system is currently utilized by government customers across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.

Atol Aviation, established in 2021, carries a legacy of Finnish aviation history and specializes in manufacturing aircraft for demanding applications. Operating from the Halli facility, the company developed the Atol Aurora amphibious aircraft and the Atol Protector, a model designed for authority and defence roles. This background provides a strong foundation for producing rugged and reliable aerial platforms for surveillance.

Anssi Rekula, founder and CEO of Atol Aviation, described the deal as a great step forward, highlighting the synergy between the two firms. He stated that both companies share a commitment to designing and manufacturing high-quality products in Finland using domestic engineering talent. This shared ethos is expected to facilitate a smooth and productive integration of their operations and expertise.

The Tactical Advantage of Aerial Detection

Deploying sensor systems on an airborne platform offers a significant tactical advantage over purely ground-based alternatives. An aerial perspective overcomes signal obstructions caused by terrain, forests, and buildings that commonly limit ground systems. This capability dramatically expands the monitored region, multiplying the effectiveness of the surveillance technology and providing a more complete operational picture.

This enhancement represents a major performance leap, particularly for wide-area surveillance and in rapidly changing operational environments. The ability to cover vast territories from the air allows for quicker threat identification and response. It is a critical improvement for military and security forces tasked with monitoring large borders, critical infrastructure, or dynamic conflict zones.

Future Operations and Expansion

With the acquisition complete, Sensofusion plans to commence manufacturing new products at the Atol factory in Halli. The company intends to expand its operations at the site and actively recruit additional personnel to support its growth. Further details about the new line of air-to-ground surveillance products are scheduled to be announced in June 2026.

This strategic acquisition marks a pivotal moment for Sensofusion, transforming it from a sensor provider into a vertically integrated defence solutions company. By merging its advanced signals intelligence technology with Atol Aviation's aircraft manufacturing prowess, the new Sensofusion Aviation is poised to become a formidable force in the global surveillance market. The move reflects a broader industry trend towards multi-domain capabilities to counter evolving security threats.
