EPIC Microsystems, a semiconductor firm focused on AI infrastructure, has secured $21 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round. Led by Seligman Ventures, the investment will fast-track the commercialization of its novel vertical power delivery technology. This new capital brings the company's total funding to $26 million and adds industry veteran Umesh Padval to its Board of Directors.

Addressing the AI Power Challenge

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is pushing data center power demands to unprecedented levels, with rack densities approaching one megawatt. This surge has exposed significant limitations in traditional power delivery systems, creating critical bottlenecks for hyperscalers. These legacy solutions struggle with efficiency, thermal management, and physical integration challenges as power requirements escalate.

An Innovative Architectural Approach

EPIC Microsystems is tackling this issue with its hybrid switched-capacitor (HSC) architecture, a fundamental redesign of DC-DC power delivery. The company's silicon-proven technology replaces bulky, inefficient inductors with a more effective combination of capacitors and optimized components. This innovation promises to deliver superior power efficiency, current density, and thermal performance for the next era of AI compute.

The primary advantage of EPIC's solution is its compact, low-profile design, which is optimized for vertical space and current density. This allows for greater rack densification, supporting more AI accelerators and GPUs in the same footprint. Consequently, it reduces heat dissipation and enables more effective system-level thermal management, a crucial factor in modern data centers.

Strategic Investment and Industry Confidence

The funding round, led by Seligman Ventures with participation from Intel Capital and AICONIC Ventures, signals strong investor confidence in EPIC's vision. Umesh Padval, Managing Partner at Seligman Ventures, noted that power density and efficiency have become primary constraints in scaling AI infrastructure. He affirmed that EPIC's vertical power architecture is well-positioned to meet the demands of next-generation AI systems.

Sabin Eftimie, CEO of EPIC Microsystems, stated that existing power ecosystems cannot keep pace with AI's power demands. He explained that their approach provides hyperscalers with greater architectural flexibility as rack power scales into the multi-megawatt era. This sentiment is echoed by early investor Lip-Bu Tan, who emphasized that power delivery innovation is as crucial as advances in AI silicon itself.

Experienced Leadership and Future Outlook

The company was founded by a team of industry veterans with extensive experience in power semiconductor design and commercialization. This team previously pioneered switched-capacitor power solutions that enabled fast charging in hundreds of millions of mobile devices worldwide. Their proven track record demonstrates a strong capability to scale advanced power architectures from concept to high-volume production.

The appointment of Umesh Padval to the board further strengthens the company's strategic leadership. His deep experience as a semiconductor industry veteran and investor will be invaluable in guiding EPIC's commercialization strategy. This move positions the company to effectively capitalize on the significant market opportunity presented by the evolving needs of AI data centers.

With its new $21 million in funding, EPIC Microsystems is poised to address a critical bottleneck in the advancement of AI infrastructure. The company's innovative hybrid switched-capacitor technology offers a scalable and efficient solution to the growing power challenges facing modern data centers. This strategic investment accelerates the company's mission to enable the next decade of high-performance AI compute through foundational architectural breakthroughs.
