Engine has acquired Options Travel in its first acquisition, bringing a long-established corporate travel management company into its business as it develops new technology for travel management companies. The Denver-based travel and spend management platform said the transaction is intended to support an artificial intelligence-native online booking tool that combines travel booking with operational and financial functions. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, while Options Travel is expected to retain its name, leadership, and independent client operations.
Acquisition Structure
Founded in 1992 and based in Mount Prospect, Illinois, Options Travel has provided managed travel services for more than three decades, including customized travel policies, mobile reservation tools, and support for groups and meetings. Its employees will join Engine following the acquisition, although the company will continue serving customers through its existing organization and under General Manager Brett Buynack’s leadership. Engine also acquired TempoTrip, a group flight product developed by the family behind Options Travel in 2018, expanding the technology and operating expertise included in the deal.
Building Alongside Travel Management Companies
The acquisition follows approximately nine months of collaboration between Engine and Options Travel, during which Engine examined the everyday systems used by corporate travel agents. According to Engine, the partnership highlighted how agents frequently depend on fragmented and outdated software, creating manual work across bookings, customer records, reporting, payments, and traveler support. Rather than developing a product without direct operational input, Engine is positioning Options Travel as both a development partner and an early customer for the planned platform.
A Unified AI-Native Booking Platform
Engine’s new online booking tool is designed to place booking, payments, reporting, customer management, and duty-of-care capabilities within one system. The platform will provide agents with a consolidated dashboard covering multiple corporate clients, while applying each customer’s negotiated rates, travel policies, and traveler preferences during searches. Engine said streamlined workflows could reduce booking times to as little as 2.5 minutes, compared with an industry average approaching 15 minutes, and use automation to identify disruptions requiring agent attention.
Responding to Technology Pressure
The deal reflects growing pressure on travel management companies to modernize the technology supporting their service-led business models. Engine cited Global Business Travel Association research indicating that nearly one-third of corporate travel buyers are reconsidering their travel management provider, with technology shortcomings emerging as a significant factor. The company also pointed to demand for automated disruption handling, arguing that better software can help agents focus on client relationships and complex travel needs rather than repetitive administrative work.
Engine Expands Its Corporate Travel Strategy
Engine currently offers Engine Travel for flights, hotels, rental cars, group travel, and meetings, alongside Engine Spend, its expense management platform and business card. The company says its products are used by more than one million travelers and over 33,000 businesses, and it is backed by Telescope Partners, Blackstone, and Permira. By entering the travel management company technology market, Engine is broadening its role from directly serving businesses to providing infrastructure that other managed travel providers can use with their own clients.
Options Travel’s acquisition gives Engine direct access to an experienced travel management operation as it develops a new platform for an industry still reliant on legacy systems. Options Travel will preserve its customer-facing identity and leadership, while contributing practical expertise to technology intended for use across the wider travel management sector. Engine plans to demonstrate the online booking tool at the Global Business Travel Association Convention in Chicago from August 3 to 5, marking the first public step in its effort to turn the acquisition into a broader industry product.
