EFG Finance, the non-bank financial services division of EFG Holding, has acquired a majority stake in the remittance aggregator Balad. This strategic transaction places Egypt's first licensed remittance platform under the control of a major financial institution. The move signals a significant development in the country's rapidly growing cross-border payments sector.
A Strategic Move in a Booming Market
The acquisition comes as Egypt solidifies its position as Africa's largest remittance market, receiving a record $41.5 billion in 2025. Balad, founded in 2022, operates a unique B2B infrastructure platform that simplifies these international transfers. The company's model connects global payment operators to a comprehensive domestic payout network.
After securing the first aggregator license from the Central Bank of Egypt in early 2025, Balad established itself as a key innovator. Its platform provides a single integration point for accessing over 58 banks, numerous mobile wallets, and thousands of cash pickup locations. This streamlines the process for fintech firms and financial institutions sending money into the country.
Vision for Expanded Financial Services
Balad's long-term strategy extends far beyond facilitating simple money transfers for the Egyptian diaspora. Founder and CEO Adham Azzam envisions the platform as the foundation for a deeper financial relationship between Egyptians abroad and their home country. The goal is to transform one-time transactions into lasting economic engagement.
This vision includes enabling expatriates to seamlessly pay for education and healthcare, save, invest, and even purchase property in Egypt. Balad aims to build the essential infrastructure that allows its partners to offer these comprehensive financial services. Ultimately, the mission is to create a robust bridge connecting the diaspora to the domestic economy.
Institutional Backing and Future Growth
The backing from EFG Finance provides Balad with significant institutional capacity and access to a vast financial services ecosystem. Aladdin ElAfifi, CEO of EFG Finance, highlighted the alignment with their strategy of advancing financial inclusion and digital transformation. This investment is intended to help Balad scale its infrastructure and expand its partnerships.
With this new support, the company will focus on accelerating platform development and deepening its integration within the remittance value chain. Balad's early investors, including First Circle Capital and Acasia Ventures, will retain minority stakes, signaling continued confidence in its trajectory. Adham Azzam will continue to lead the company as CEO through this next phase of growth.
This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for Balad, equipping the fintech pioneer with the resources of an established financial powerhouse. The partnership is poised to enhance the efficiency and security of Egypt's remittance ecosystem while pursuing a broader vision of financial empowerment. As Balad navigates a competitive and regulated landscape, its success could set a new standard for cross-border payments in the region.
