The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will gather 60 of West Africa's most promising startups for the second ECOWAS Startup Awards, scheduled for 21 to 30 September 2026 in Abuja. Hosted at the new ECOWAS Headquarters, the event will spotlight home-grown solutions that can transform businesses, create opportunities, and accelerate regional integration. Its focus is to scale West African startups for digital transformation, regional integration, and sustainable value chain development to drive market access.

Programme Structure and Strategic Sectors

The ten-day programme will open with a Virtual Masterclass from 21 to 25 September before transitioning to a pitching, exhibition, and awards segment from 28 to 30 September. This structure is intended to connect startups with investors, business leaders, and development partners in a dynamic setting. It also allows participants to refine their pitches and engage directly with potential collaborators.

Sectoral Representation and Market Potential

The 60 selected startups span six strategic sectors, including FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech and Food Systems, EdTech and Skills Development, CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation, and Tourism, Hospitality and Travel Tech. These areas reflect the region's priority industries where innovation can deliver broad economic and social impact. By bringing diverse ventures together, the programme aims to strengthen cross-sector linkages and regional value chains.

Seed Funding and Investment Ambitions

The top three startups will receive seed funding of 30,000 US dollars, 20,000 US dollars, and 15,000 US dollars respectively. In addition to these direct awards, organisers are targeting five million US dollars in deals across the thematic tracks. This combination of prize capital and facilitated investment is intended to give promising ventures both immediate resources and long-term growth opportunities.

Building on the Inaugural Edition

The second edition builds on the inaugural ECOWAS Startup Awards held in Niamey in 2021, which established a foundation for regional entrepreneurship support. Organisers say the current event goes beyond a competition to create a lasting platform for innovation and business development. It is positioned as a strategic intervention rather than a one-off showcase.

Digital Learning and Capacity Building

A key legacy of the initiative is the ECOWAS Private Sector Development Academy, a permanent digital learning platform designed to strengthen the capabilities of startups, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. The academy will focus on enterprise development, trade, and competitiveness as core areas of learning. This component aims to ensure that the event's benefits extend beyond the awards period and reach a wider regional audience.

Partners and Regional Integration Goals

ECOWAS is implementing the awards with support from partners including the International Trade Centre, GIZ, ASKY, UNIDO, and the Bank of Industry of Nigeria. These collaborations are expected to turn West Africa's entrepreneurial energy into scalable enterprises and stronger regional value chains. The broader objective is to improve access to markets across the region and beyond while advancing digital transformation and sustainable development.

The second ECOWAS Startup Awards represents a significant step toward strengthening West Africa's innovation ecosystem and supporting high-potential entrepreneurs. By combining capacity building, direct seed funding, and investment facilitation, the event aims to produce lasting economic impact across strategic sectors. As ECOWAS continues to pursue deeper regional integration, such platforms will be central to connecting local innovation with larger markets and investment networks.
