Daedal Systems, a Toronto-based developer of standardized plasma measurement systems for the nuclear fusion industry, has secured US$4.035 million in new financing to accelerate its commercial rollout. OMERS Ventures led the round, which was announced on September 28, 2026. The company plans to use the capital to industrialize its measurement platform and deliver its first diagnostic systems to pilot customers.
Funding and Deployment Plans
Daedal's financing includes participation from Garage Capital, Panache Ventures, Ripple Ventures, MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF), and a group of angel investors. The company will direct the proceeds toward building its first three diagnostic systems and deploying prototypes under contract with pilot customers. A research partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison will support the company's technology development and early testing.
Reducing Redundant Work in Fusion Development
Fusion developers typically build plasma diagnostic systems in-house even though measurement is not core reactor intellectual property. This practice duplicates work across the industry and diverts time, capital, and talent from the technologies that differentiate individual reactor designs. Daedal Systems offers a standardized alternative that helps fusion companies obtain high-quality plasma data without recreating similar systems internally.
Delivered as a service, the company's platform can adapt to different fusion machines and reactor approaches. By producing higher-quality data faster and independently validating technical milestones for investors and partners, Daedal gives fusion developers faster access to third-party-validated insights while allowing them to focus on reactor development. The approach also reduces reliance on lengthy peer-review timelines.
Leadership Perspective
Henry Gould, founder and chief executive officer of Daedal Systems, said he encountered the same challenge across the sector after building and deploying plasma measurement systems at General Fusion. He explained that every company needs high-quality diagnostics, but too much time and capital go into recreating similar systems in-house. Gould added that Daedal was created to give fusion companies access to standardized, high-quality plasma measurement systems that improve data quality and accelerate progress toward commercialization.
Scientific Validation
Dr. Johan Frenje, a technical advisor to Daedal Systems, said advanced plasma diagnostics were among the key enabling technologies that led to ignition and target gain at the National Ignition Facility in 2022. He added that measurement solutions designed specifically for private-sector needs will be essential as fusion technology advances. His perspective highlights the scientific value of standardized measurement infrastructure in modern fusion development.
Investor Confidence
Brian Kobus, managing partner at OMERS Ventures, said that while fusion remains nascent, realizing its significant long-term potential will require a broader ecosystem of specialized companies and world-class expertise. He added that by building the measurement infrastructure the industry needs, Daedal can strengthen that ecosystem and attract the expertise required to advance the technology. The funding round reflects confidence in Daedal's role within that broader supply chain.
Initially, Daedal Systems will serve the fusion industry, with a longer-term ambition to become a major instrumentation provider for commercial fusion power and other industries that require advanced measurement systems. The new capital positions the company to move from platform development toward customer deployments and independent validation services. As private fusion developers seek credible milestones, standardized diagnostics could become an important component of the sector's supply chain.
