Carnegie Learning, a Pittsburgh-based leader in K-12 education solutions, has acquired Ethiqly, an AI-powered writing platform, from Owl Ventures and Ethiqly management. The acquisition expands Carnegie Learning's flagship literacy solution, Lenses on Literature, which engages students in grades 6 through 12 with complex texts and grade-level tasks. According to the companies, the combined offering will support writing development while keeping teachers and students firmly at the center of the learning experience.

A Strategic Move in AI-Powered Writing Instruction

Carnegie Learning framed writing as central to how students learn to think critically, engage with complex ideas, and develop their own voice. Ethiqly supports students from brainstorming and drafting through revision, providing tools that promote deeper thinking rather than completing work for them. The acquisition reflects the company's belief that artificial intelligence should help students become stronger writers and deeper thinkers while preserving the teacher's role.

What Ethiqly Brings to the Classroom

Ethiqly was developed in collaboration with the global design and innovation firm IDEO and founded by CEO Clinton Grusd, Jared Grusd, and Brandon Grusd. The platform gives educators insight into students' thinking and growth, enabling more effective feedback and consistent evaluation. Its tools support students throughout the writing process while allowing teachers to maintain instructional oversight and consistency.

Leadership Views on AI and Student Learning

Barry Malkin, CEO of Carnegie Learning, said that writing is how students learn to think critically, wrestle with complex ideas, and develop a voice of their own. He emphasized that technology should not do the thinking for students but should help them become stronger, more independent thinkers. Clinton Grusd, Co-Founder and CEO of Ethiqly, noted that both companies believed technology should strengthen learning, not shortcut it, and that the combination would bring that philosophy to classrooms at scale.

Research-Based Foundations and Market Reach

Carnegie Learning brings more than 26 years of research-based instructional expertise and serves more than 5.5 million students and educators across all 50 states and Canada. The company was born out of Carnegie Mellon University and provides math, literacy, world languages, professional learning, and high-impact tutoring solutions. By combining that foundation with Ethiqly's technology, the organizations aim to give teachers better insight into student learning and help students become thoughtful, confident writers.

Investor Confidence and EdTech Context

Tory Patterson, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Owl Ventures, said Ethiqly was built on a shared conviction that AI should make students better writers, not do the writing for them. He added that Carnegie Learning brings the instructional rigor and classroom reach to deliver on that conviction at scale. Owl Ventures is the world's largest venture capital firm focused on education and workforce innovation, with more than US$2.2 billion in committed capital.

Building a Model for Responsible AI in Education

The companies said they are working to create a new approach to writing instruction that provides teachers with better insight into student learning and helps students grow as writers. Ethiqly's approach aligns with Carnegie Learning's view that AI should not complete assignments for students but should strengthen their thinking and writing skills. That shared focus will guide the integration of Ethiqly into the company's broader literacy offerings.

The acquisition positions Carnegie Learning to advance writing instruction through AI tools that support teachers and students without replacing human judgment. By integrating Ethiqly's platform with its existing literacy solutions, the company aims to help students develop stronger writing and critical thinking skills. The move highlights a broader effort in K-12 education to apply artificial intelligence in ways that prioritize learning, teacher insight, and student confidence.
