Brilliance Secures $7 Million for AR Laser Chip Technology

Dutch photonics startup Brilliance has successfully secured $7 million in a new funding round to accelerate the development of its innovative integrated RGB laser chip technology. This investment, led by deep-tech specialist Cottonwood Technology Fund, is earmarked for advancing next-generation Augmented Reality (AR) displays for consumer and automotive applications. The round also saw participation from existing investors, including PhotonVentures, Oost NL, and PhotiX, underscoring continued confidence in the company's vision and technological progress.


Addressing a Critical AR Hardware Challenge

The Enschede-based company is tackling a fundamental bottleneck that has long constrained the widespread adoption of augmented reality hardware. Traditional AR systems are limited by the size, power consumption, and brightness of their light engines, forcing difficult compromises between performance and form factor. These limitations have hindered the creation of lightweight, fashionable AR glasses suitable for all-day use in various lighting conditions, from indoors to bright sunlight.

Innovative Photonic Integration

Brilliance's solution centers on a proprietary photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platform based on silicon nitride, which incorporates laser technology directly onto the chip. This highly integrated approach replaces the complex and costly optical assemblies found in current AR projectors with a single, miniature component. By leveraging mature, high-volume chip manufacturing processes, the company aims to make its advanced laser chips both scalable and cost-effective for mass-market devices.

The company's technology promises significant performance improvements, including a tenfold reduction in power consumption, which is critical for enabling all-day battery life. Furthermore, the laser chips deliver enhanced brightness suitable for outdoor use and support a maximized Field of View for a more immersive and natural user experience. These advancements are designed to enable a full AR experience within the form factor of conventional, fashionable eyewear, a long-sought goal in the industry.

Strategic Growth and Market Expansion

According to CEO Tim Tiek, the company has already established a solid foundation with proven core technology and growing market traction. He stated that the new capital will be used to scale up operations, design custom solutions for clients, and prepare for an initial production launch by the end of the year. The ultimate goal is to supply scalable RGB laser chips for applications where compact size, high efficiency, and deep integration are essential for everyday use.

Brilliance is targeting a diverse range of applications beyond consumer eyewear, demonstrating the versatility of its laser chip architecture. The technology is designed to support various display systems, including advanced Head-Up Displays (HUD) in the automotive sector. It also has potential applications in industrial laser systems, showcasing a broad market opportunity for its compact and efficient light engine solutions.

A Boost for the Dutch Photonics Ecosystem

The investment also highlights the strength of the regional deep-tech ecosystem, which has nurtured the company since its founding in 2023. Jordy Schaufeli of Oost NL noted that Brilliance exemplifies how technology, entrepreneurship, and ecosystem support can converge for rapid development. The company has quickly become a valuable player within the Dutch photonics landscape, a key technology sector where the Netherlands aims to build a strong international position.


With this $7 million in growth capital, Brilliance is well-positioned to industrialize its laser chip technology and address persistent hardware challenges in the AR market. The company's focus on creating compact, efficient, and bright light engines could prove pivotal for the next generation of AR glasses and automotive displays.
