Benford, a registered audit firm in Norway, has raised €5 million in pre-seed funding to build a new generation of technology-native financial audit services across Europe. The company operates as the auditor rather than selling software to audit firms, and its proprietary AuditOS platform is already running live client audits. The round was led by firstminute capital, Global Founders Capital, Sondo, and founders behind HSO, Pennylane, Qonto and Amesto.

A Mid-Market Audit Gap

European financial audit has been largely abandoned at the small and mid-market end of the market. Large audit firms are stepping back, consolidators are buying practices faster than they can modernise them, and local firms rarely have the resources to rebuild their technology stack. Yet audit fees keep increasing while the customer experience has worsened year after year.

How Benford Works

Benford is vertically integrated, holding the licence, building the platform, and employing qualified auditors who scope each engagement, rule on every exception, and sign every opinion. The company says it is not changing what an audit is, but changing how it is delivered. Routine work is handled by systems while professional judgement remains with people, creating a new operating paradigm for the profession.

Inside AuditOS

AuditOS connects to a company's ERP, subledgers, invoices, banks, and other operational systems to build a single audit brain that deepens through each engagement. Every test runs against this core, and every input is logged, traced to its source, and assigned to a named auditor. Follow-ups live in one collaborative interface, reducing hours that finance teams lose to audit and lowering costs that never appear on the invoice.

Founders With Operational Experience

Benford was founded by Mads Bogen Øye, Thibault Mallion and Andreas Rystad, who bring experience from Palantir, Goldman Sachs and One Peak. The founders argue that previous modernization efforts have aimed at the auditor's desk while leaving the broader firm untouched. By becoming the auditor itself, Benford can rebuild both the service and the technology around it.

Investor Confidence

Michael Stothard, partner at firstminute capital, said innovation in audit has meant selling tools to auditors for twenty years, while most audits are still done the old way. He described audit as a huge, structurally overlooked market that nobody has tried to rebuild from first principles. Stothard also noted that the Big Four are pulling back from the mid-market and that the Benford team can combine software with full end-to-end execution.

Support From Industry Builders

David Sainteff, Partner at Global Founders Capital, said no process is better suited to automation than audit's groundwork, yet few are less automated. He added that clients pay the price both in fees and in the internal hours spent facilitating a process that software should handle. The investor base also includes Peter ter Maaten of HSO, Arthur Waller and Quentin de Metz of Pennylane, Alexandre Prot of Qonto, and the Spandow family of Amesto.

European Expansion

The new funding will be used to grow Benford's London and Oslo offices and to expand into Sweden and other European markets. The company currently has a team of around twenty people and is hiring across audit and engineering. Benford aims to use the capital to build the audit firm of the next decade.

Benford represents a shift in audit delivery by combining a licensed audit practice with software purpose-built for the workflow. Its model seeks to reduce the total cost of audit without compromising quality, and its second-year engagements begin where the first year finished. With fresh capital and experienced backers, the company is positioned to bring its approach to more European businesses.
