Newsletter platform Beehiiv has launched a native podcasting service, enabling creators to host, distribute, and monetize audio content. This expansion positions the company as a comprehensive solution, intensifying competition with rivals like Substack and Patreon. The move provides a unified hub for creators who manage both written and audio content.


A Strategic Expansion into Audio

According to CEO Tyler Denk, the move into podcasting was a logical step due to the overlap between the two formats. He noted that both are typically episodic, long-form content distributed to a dedicated audience. This expansion was heavily influenced by user requests for a consolidated platform to manage their creative endeavors.

The new feature allows creators to upload audio and have it automatically distributed to platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Each episode includes a full transcript and is published on its own SEO-optimized webpage to enhance discoverability. The platform also provides IAB-compliant analytics, offering detailed insights into listener engagement.

Monetization and Competitive Edge

Creators can now integrate podcasts into their existing subscription models, offering private audio feeds as a premium benefit. This allows them to bundle exclusive episodes or early access with paid newsletters, creating a more valuable offering. The platform provides the flexibility to offer both free and paid podcast content.

Beehiiv is distinguishing itself by allowing creators to keep 100% of their subscription revenue, a stark contrast to competitors. While Substack takes a 10% cut and Patreon an 8% share, Beehiiv operates on a flat-fee model. This financial advantage is a core part of its strategy to attract established creators.

Looking ahead, the company plans to extend its advertising network to support dynamically inserted ads within podcasts. This will open an additional revenue stream for creators beyond direct subscriptions. To spearhead this initiative, Beehiiv is actively recruiting a Head of Podcasts to oversee the program's growth.
