Autonomous vehicle specialist Aurrigo International plc has secured £1.43 million in UK government funding to pioneer new safety solutions for airports. The grant will finance the company's innovative 'SENTRY' project, which aims to deploy driverless vehicles for critical airside operations. This initiative represents a significant step forward in leveraging autonomous technology to enhance both safety and operational efficiency within the aviation sector.


The SENTRY Project Initiative

The core of the initiative involves deploying Aurrigo's autonomous Auto-Shuttle vehicles to perform a range of routine but essential airside inspection tasks. These duties include conducting security patrols, carrying out perimeter checks, and monitoring runway surfaces for debris or damage. The project also aims to use the vehicles to manage wildlife, such as counting birds and encouraging them to move to safer locations away from aircraft.

Strategic Government Backing

This funding was awarded under the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade’s CAM Pathfinder scheme, a program delivered in partnership with Zenzic and Innovate UK. Aurrigo CEO David Keene stated that the grant reflects the quality of their technology and supports their mission to build intelligent and sustainable transport systems. The project aims to free up experienced airport staff for tasks requiring human judgment, thereby raising overall safety standards.

Collaborative Development and Testing

To ensure comprehensive development and real-world applicability, the SENTRY project brings together a consortium of key partners. The Warwick Manufacturing Group at the University of Warwick will provide crucial research expertise, while the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will offer regulatory oversight. Operational testing will be conducted at Teesside International Airport in the UK and will also extend to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in the US.

Addressing Airside Challenges

Airports present a uniquely hazardous environment, a reality often unseen by passengers, according to Aurrigo's Chief Technology Officer, Simon Brewerton. Staff frequently work in difficult conditions, including darkness and poor weather, while navigating active taxiways and runways near moving aircraft. SENTRY will explore how small, autonomous vehicles can perform these duties safely by following pre-agreed rules with air traffic control, mitigating human risk.

Enhancing Operational Efficiency

By automating routine inspections, the SENTRY project is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency and consistency at airports. The autonomous vehicles can operate around the clock, providing continuous monitoring of critical infrastructure like runways and taxiways for cracks or foreign objects. This constant vigilance helps prevent potential damage to aircraft and frees human personnel to focus on more complex, high-value tasks that require their expertise.

Broader Implications for UK Innovation

The grant is part of a wider government strategy to position the UK as a global leader in Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM). Mark Cracknell, Programme Director at Zenzic, highlighted that the CAM Pathfinder program is putting the UK in the driving seat for developing and deploying future mobility solutions. Projects like SENTRY are seen as vital for transforming UK businesses, creating jobs, and strengthening the domestic technology supply chain.
