Argentine climate-tech startup Satellites on Fire has closed a $2.7 million seed funding round led by Dalus Capital. The company developed an AI-powered platform for early wildfire detection, providing critical response time to emergency services. This investment will fuel the global expansion of a solution that originated as a high school project.


Revolutionizing Wildfire Detection

The company's platform integrates diverse data sources, including satellite imagery, tower cameras, and advanced fire propagation models. Its artificial intelligence engine analyzes this information in real-time to identify heat signatures indicative of new fires. This multi-layered approach provides a comprehensive and rapid detection capability for clients across various sectors.

Satellites on Fire gains its edge by aggregating imagery from more than eight satellites across NASA, NOAA, and the European Space Agency. This provides data updates as frequently as every five minutes, drastically reducing coverage gaps common in other systems. The increased information density gives first responders a crucial time advantage in containment efforts.

The company reports its system detects fires an average of 35 minutes ahead of established services like NASA's FIRMS. In one documented case, the platform provided a seven-hour lead, demonstrating its potential to mitigate significant damage. This critical window is often the difference between a manageable incident and a catastrophic wildfire.

From School Project to Global Scale

The venture was founded in 2020 by three teenagers: Franco Rodriguez Viau, Ulises López Pacholczak, and Joaquín Chamo. Their motivation stemmed from personal experience after wildfires devastated the homes of family friends in Argentina. Now 22, Rodriguez Viau leads the company as CEO, driving its mission forward.

The founders rebuilt their initial prototype after extensive consultations with over 80 firefighters and emergency personnel. This direct feedback ensured the final product was operationally effective and addressed real-world needs. This commitment to practical innovation earned Rodriguez Viau a place among MIT Technology Review's top innovators.

Today, the company operates on a software-as-a-service model, serving over 55,000 users across 21 countries. Its clients include forestry companies, energy utilities, and government agencies who pay based on the area monitored. This rapid growth highlights the global demand for advanced early-warning fire detection systems.

Strategic Expansion and Future Plans

The new capital will primarily fuel the company's strategic expansion into the United States, a market heavily impacted by wildfires. Funds will also be allocated to optimizing the platform's AI models and launching a new client intelligence dashboard. This move positions the company to address one of the world's most pressing climate challenges.

Satellites on Fire is already conducting pilot programs in the U.S. and has partnered with the non-profit wildfire tracker Watch Duty. The company is also collaborating with insurance giant Aon to develop a parametric wildfire insurance product. These initiatives are designed to broaden the platform's application and market penetration.

Investor confidence is high, with lead investor Dalus Capital citing it as an example of world-class Latin American innovation. John Mills, CEO of Watch Duty and an advisor, stated his team was "genuinely astounded" by the platform's performance. This strong endorsement from industry leaders validates the company's technological approach and its growth potential.
