Angani Ltd, a prominent cloud services provider in East Africa, has officially joined the London Internet Exchange (LINX) Nairobi interconnection hub. This strategic move enhances regional peering capabilities and underscores the growing importance of localized internet traffic exchange in Kenya. The partnership is set to improve digital service delivery across a region experiencing rapid growth in internet usage and cloud adoption.

Strategic Expansion for Enhanced Connectivity

As East Africa's leading provider of locally hosted applications and digital services, Angani's decision to connect to LINX Nairobi is a significant step. This new connection complements its existing presence at LINX Mombasa, which was established in 2025. The dual-hub strategy strengthens Angani's ability to peer across key locations, ensuring more reliable and low-latency services for its customers.

LINX first entered the African market with the launch of LINX Nairobi in 2023, creating a resilient internet exchange point (IXP) accessible from multiple data centers. The subsequent launch of LINX Mombasa in 2025 established a crucial gateway for international subsea cable systems. Together, these two exchanges provide networks with greater choice and control over traffic routing within Kenya and the broader region.

The Impact of Regional Peering

By peering locally at both LINX Nairobi and LINX Mombasa, network operators can exchange traffic much closer to the end user. This approach significantly reduces reliance on international transit routes, which are often more expensive and introduce higher latency. The result is a faster, more dependable digital experience for businesses and consumers throughout East Africa.

Denson Ngumo, Chief Technology Officer at Angani Ltd, highlighted the critical role of local peering for the company's operations. He stated that with 80% of their traffic being local, connecting to LINX Nairobi was an essential and logical decision. This move allows Angani to offer customers access to cloud services and international content delivery networks with minimal delay and enhanced resiliency.

Fostering a Robust Digital Ecosystem

The overall presence of LINX in Kenya has shown remarkable growth, reflecting strong regional demand for high-quality interconnection. Over the past year, combined traffic across both Kenyan IXPs has surged twenty-fold, reaching a peak of over 330Gbps. This substantial increase demonstrates the value that LINX's infrastructure brings to the developing digital landscape of East Africa.

Patrick Mbogo, Business Executive for Africa at LINX, noted that Angani's strategy aligns perfectly with LINX's mission. He explained that the exchange encourages regional peering by including a 10GE port and 4Gbps of service at each global location within its membership fee. This model is designed to incentivize keeping traffic as close to the end user as possible, thereby improving overall network performance.

Angani's expanded partnership with LINX marks a pivotal moment for Kenya's internet infrastructure, showcasing a commitment to localized traffic exchange. This collaboration not only enhances Angani's service delivery but also contributes to the broader goal of building a more resilient and efficient digital ecosystem in East Africa. The move is indicative of a regional trend toward optimizing network performance to support accelerating cloud adoption and content consumption.
