Wellington-based AI startup Sterling has successfully secured NZ$3.8 million in a significant seed funding round. The investment, led by venture capital firm Blackbird, will fuel the company's mission to automate routine finance and accounting tasks. Sterling is developing what it describes as an "autopilot" for finance teams, designed to streamline complex workflows and enhance operational efficiency.

Automating Financial Workflows

Sterling's platform functions as an autonomous system that integrates directly with a company's existing financial tools, from ERPs to email inboxes. It intelligently handles tasks such as invoice processing, bank reconciliation, and month-end routines without constant human supervision. This "autopilot" approach ensures that financial operations continue seamlessly even after business hours, preparing everything for review.

The technology addresses the common issue of highly qualified accountants being burdened with repetitive, time-consuming tasks. By automating these operational duties, Sterling enables finance professionals to shift their focus from manual processing to more strategic analysis. This transition empowers teams to provide greater value and insight to their organizations, moving beyond mundane data entry.

Founders' Vision and Origins

The company was co-founded by Nik Wakelin and Ludwig Wendzich, who bring extensive experience from global tech firms like Deliveroo, Apple, and Lightspeed. Their inspiration for Sterling stemmed from personal connections, as both of their wives work in the accounting and finance sectors. This firsthand insight into the industry's pain points directly shaped the startup's core mission and product development.

Wakelin and Wendzich aim to build the next generational technology company to emerge from New Zealand's thriving tech scene. They draw upon the legacy of successful local companies like Xero and Vend, where many of their team members and investors gained experience. Their goal is to leverage this collective expertise to create a world-class software solution for a global audience.

Strategic Investment and Market Expansion

The NZ$3.8 million funding round was spearheaded by the trans-Tasman venture capital firm Blackbird. It also attracted support from a notable group of Kiwi founders and investors with ties to successful companies like Trade Me and Pushpay. This strong backing from the local technology ecosystem signals significant confidence in Sterling's potential and leadership team.

With this new capital, Sterling plans to accelerate its growth by expanding its team and pursuing larger enterprise customers. The company is targeting key markets for expansion, including its home base in New Zealand, as well as Australia and the United States. This strategic push is designed to establish Sterling as a key player in the global financial automation space.

Despite being founded just ten months ago, Sterling has already demonstrated significant market traction with early adopters. Clients such as honey exporter Manukora and software company Storypark are already utilizing the platform. The system has reportedly completed approximately 1200 hours of automated finance work, showcasing its immediate impact and efficiency.

This substantial seed funding positions Sterling to make a seismic impact on the accounting and finance industry. By providing a true "autopilot" solution, the company is not just creating a tool but is redefining the role of finance professionals. As Sterling expands into international markets, its innovative approach to AI-driven automation is set to capture significant attention.
