Chennai-based agritech startup Fragaria Fruits is reportedly in talks to raise ₹40 crore, or about $4.2 million, in a fresh funding round that is expected to be led by Blume Ventures, according to sources cited by Inc42. Existing investors, including WEH Ventures and Rainmatter, are also expected to participate in the proposed financing, which could value the startup at approximately ₹160 crore on a post-money basis. The discussions remain ongoing, however, and neither Fragaria Fruits nor Blume Ventures had publicly confirmed the transaction or its final terms at the time of the report.

Funding Follows Earlier Seed Round

The potential investment comes roughly 10 months after Fragaria Fruits raised $2 million in seed funding led by WEH Ventures, with participation from Rainmatter, Spiral Ventures, and Sashi Kumar, founder of Akshayakalpa Organic. That financing supported the startup's expansion beyond its initial Chennai pilot and helped fund the development of larger-scale production infrastructure as the company sought to commercialize its controlled-environment farming model. If completed, the latest round would provide additional capital for Fragaria to increase production capacity, strengthen distribution, and expand its presence in India's growing premium fruit market.

Controlled-Environment Farming Model

Founded in 2024 by Harish Varadharajan, Timothy Chad Van Niekerk, and Damian López-Salazar, Fragaria Fruits uses indoor vertical farming technology to produce premium, pesticide-free strawberries throughout the year. Its facilities closely monitor and optimize factors including light, temperature, humidity, nutrients, and irrigation, allowing crops to be grown under controlled conditions that reduce dependence on weather and seasonal growing cycles. The approach is designed to provide more consistent quality and output while addressing some of the challenges associated with cultivating premium berry varieties in India's climate.

Scaling the Oh! Fruits Brand

Fragaria markets its strawberries through its consumer brand Oh! Fruits, positioning them as a premium alternative to conventional strawberries available in the Indian market. Following the successful operation of its Chennai pilot farm, the company has been scaling activities in Bengaluru and has targeted daily production of around 120 kilograms of strawberries as it develops a larger commercial facility near the city. Fragaria is also working on dedicated production capacity for blueberries and raspberries, suggesting that the startup intends to expand beyond strawberries and establish a broader portfolio in the premium berry segment.

Agritech Opportunity in India

The fundraising discussions come amid continued growth in India's agritech sector, where startups are developing technologies across food production, agricultural supply chains, farm management, logistics, and alternative cultivation methods. According to Inc42 and StarAgri's Indian Agritech Market Landscape Report 2025, the country's agritech market is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 25% and reach $28 billion by 2030. While controlled-environment berry farming remains a specialized segment, increasing consumer demand for premium produce and more predictable year-round supply could create opportunities for companies capable of operating these capital-intensive systems efficiently.

A successful ₹40 crore financing would mark another significant step in Fragaria Fruits' expansion as it moves from pilot-scale farming toward larger commercial production and a broader range of premium berries. The reported involvement of Blume Ventures alongside existing shareholders would also provide the company with additional institutional backing as it seeks to scale its farming infrastructure and consumer brand. Because the round remains under discussion, however, the proposed investment amount, participating investors, and ₹160 crore post-money valuation should be regarded as provisional until formally announced.
