AfriLabs, the continent’s largest network of innovation hubs, has formalized a landmark partnership with the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) to foster inclusive innovation, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement across Africa. The collaboration comes ahead of the 10th edition of the AfriLabs Annual Gathering (AAG2025), scheduled to take place in Nairobi from October 7–9. The agreement aims to create long-term value by combining resources, networks, and policy frameworks to support startups and strengthen innovation ecosystems continent-wide.

Shared Commitment to Sustainable Development

Through this alliance, AfriLabs and Konza Technopolis will jointly design and implement a wide array of initiatives that span startup incubation, investment facilitation, intellectual property support, and research collaboration. The agreement reinforces both institutions’ commitment to positioning Africa as a global player in technology-led development. By aligning innovation policy with entrepreneurial capacity-building, the partnership sets the foundation for scaling impactful solutions to key African challenges.

AAG2025: Launchpad for Collaboration

The AfriLabs Annual Gathering 2025 will be the first flagship event under this new agreement, with Konza Technopolis taking on the role of Strategic Government Partner. As part of its responsibilities, Konza will mobilize national stakeholders, organize themed showcases, and drive participation from high-level government and industry figures. The event, themed “Africa’s Innovation Future: Policy, Partnerships, and Progress,” will highlight the power of collaboration in shaping inclusive, tech-driven futures for African communities.

Broad-Based Innovation Programming

The agreement outlines a series of initiatives designed to accelerate the innovation landscape in Africa. These include mentorship and soft-landing programs for startups, support for intellectual property rights and commercialization, and collaborative research in areas such as artificial intelligence, cleantech, healthtech, and smart infrastructure. Through bootcamps, training programs, and ecosystem exchanges, the partnership will also invest in talent development and policy dialogue across the continent.

Unlocking Investment and Scaling Ventures

To connect innovators to capital, the collaboration will link startups within Konza to AfriLabs’ Catalytic Africa fund and its wider investor networks. By facilitating cross-border startup exchanges, shared incubation efforts, and regional venture-building, the agreement opens new pathways for scale and market access across all 53 countries in AfriLabs’ network. Additionally, Konza’s advanced infrastructure will serve as a real-world testing environment for smart city and IoT innovations developed by African entrepreneurs.

Leadership Perspectives on the Agreement

John Paul Okwiri, CEO of Konza Technopolis, emphasized the national and continental significance of the partnership. “This MoU reflects the commitment of Konza Technopolis to strengthening Africa’s innovation ecosystem and positioning Kenya as a hub for tech-driven growth,” he stated. Anna Ekeledo, Executive Director of AfriLabs, echoed this sentiment, noting that the collaboration is grounded in a shared vision to empower Africa’s next generation of innovators through access to infrastructure, networks, and knowledge.

A Platform for Long-Term Ecosystem Growth

This strategic collaboration is designed not just as a one-off event partnership but as a long-term framework to co-create resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking innovation ecosystems. By leveraging Konza’s smart city capabilities and AfriLabs’ pan-African reach, the initiative is expected to generate transformative outcomes in both urban and rural innovation spaces. The parties involved see this as a model for future public-private innovation partnerships across the continent.

As preparations for AAG2025 intensify, the partnership between AfriLabs and Konza Technopolis sets a new precedent for cross-sector collaboration in African innovation. It blends government infrastructure with grassroots innovation networks to accelerate progress on multiple fronts—from smart cities and digital talent to venture funding and policy reform. This joint commitment signals a turning point for African innovation, where collective action shapes a smarter, more inclusive future.
