The National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) has marked its inaugural investment in the transport sector with a $30.7 million equity injection into Applied Electric Vehicles (AEV). This strategic funding is designed to accelerate the commercial production of AEV's autonomous electric vehicles in Australia. The Melbourne-based company is a key player in developing advanced mobility solutions for industrial and commercial use.

A Strategic Boost for Autonomous Technology

The NRFC's commitment forms the cornerstone of AEV's broader USD$40 million Series B funding round, which also attracted support from investors like Barrenjoey and Japan Post Capital. This substantial capital infusion validates the company's innovative approach and robust business model. The investment will significantly enhance AEV's capacity to scale its operations and meet growing market demand.

Funding is earmarked for the manufacturing and widespread deployment of AEV’s flagship "Blanc Robot" autonomous vehicle fleet. The vehicle features a unique cab-less design with a flat, modular chassis that can be adapted for numerous purposes. This versatility allows it to serve a wide range of sectors, from logistics to mining operations.

Pioneering Australian Innovation and Manufacturing

At the core of AEV's vehicles is a proprietary digital control system, an advanced combination of software and electronics. This system ensures the autonomous vehicles can operate safely and reliably, even in hazardous or remote industrial environments. The technology places Australian-developed innovation at the forefront of the global autonomous transport revolution.

AEV's CEO, Julian Broadbent, noted that the investment validates the company's vision to rebuild local manufacturing capabilities after the exit of traditional automakers. He emphasized that AEV capitalized on this opportunity by harnessing Australia's deep pool of engineering talent. This strategic pivot has enabled the creation of a groundbreaking technology with real-world impact.

Economic Impact and Future Applications

This investment is set to generate significant economic benefits, supporting 113 existing roles and creating up to 25 new skilled jobs in Melbourne. AEV's manufacturing process involves integrating its proprietary software and electronics into a chassis provided by partner Suzuki Motor Corporation. This model secures high-value advanced manufacturing and technical expertise within Australia.

The Blanc Robot is designed for diverse applications, including dust suppression in mining and streamlining inter-factory logistics. Its deployment can also help address global driver shortages in last-mile delivery and perform tasks in conditions unsafe for humans. As an electric platform, it supports the transport sector's crucial transition toward sustainable energy sources.

NRFC CEO David Gall expressed confidence in AEV, calling it an Australian success story with a sound and scalable business model. He highlighted that the company's strong product pipeline and industry partnerships will enable rapid growth. The investment aligns perfectly with the NRFC's mission to commercialize local innovation and expand the nation's manufacturing base.

This landmark investment by the NRFC represents a pivotal moment for Australia's advanced manufacturing and transport technology sectors. It not only accelerates AEV's mission to deploy its autonomous solutions globally but also reinforces a national commitment to sovereign industrial capability. The partnership is poised to create high-skilled jobs and establish Australia as a leader in the future of mobility.
