Academy Ventures has announced the appointment of veteran technology investor Rob Born to spearhead the expansion of its venture capital platform. With 25 years of experience, Born will help formalize the firm's investment strategy, which focuses on military veteran-led companies and defense technology. This strategic hire signals a new phase of growth for the venture arm of Academy Securities.

A Strategic Appointment for Growth

Rob Born brings a distinguished track record spanning two decades of building and investing in technology companies. Most recently, he served as senior vice president at Vocera Communications, where he led a strategy that resulted in a tenfold stock price increase. His leadership was instrumental in the healthcare technology company's eventual $3 billion acquisition by Stryker.

Before his tenure at Vocera, Born was a partner at the early-stage venture capital fund Thomas Weisel Venture Partners. This role provided him with deep experience in evaluating and investing in emerging technology businesses. His background combines critical perspectives from both the investment and operational sides of company development, making him a key asset for the firm.

Expanding the Investment Platform

Academy Ventures is preparing for a significant expansion, having already invested internal partners' capital in more than 20 companies. The firm now plans to allow select outside investment capital, marking a pivotal step in its evolution. This transition aims to build a more institutionalized venture operation with broader reach and capabilities.

The investment platform concentrates on two key areas: companies led and operated by military veterans and early-stage defense technology businesses. It uniquely draws upon the extensive resources of the broader Academy Securities organization. This includes deep military experience, robust financial services capabilities, and sophisticated geopolitical expertise to support its portfolio.

A Thematic Approach to Defense Technology

In his new role, Born will help develop a more proactive and thematic investment process for the firm. He noted that "impactful tailwinds in the defense technology market" enhance prospects for success. The goal is to build a disciplined approach that leverages the firm's unique expertise to deliver superior returns as a differentiated investor.

This expansion comes as investors in defense technology face distinct commercialization challenges compared to conventional enterprise software. Companies must navigate complex government procurement processes, lengthy sales cycles, and stringent testing requirements. Successfully deploying technology into mission-critical environments requires specialized knowledge and dedicated support from investors.

Academy Ventures' affiliation with Academy Securities, the nation's first post-9/11 veteran-owned investment bank, provides a distinct advantage. This connection offers portfolio companies access to a wider financial platform, including capital markets and geopolitical intelligence. This integrated support system is designed to help emerging defense technology companies scale effectively and overcome market hurdles.

Rob Born's appointment marks a deliberate effort to transform Academy Ventures into a premier institutional venture platform. By formalizing its investment process and preparing to accept outside capital, the firm is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing defense technology sector. This strategic move combines disciplined investment selection with deep operational and sector-specific support for its portfolio companies.
