Aalyria, a technology firm spun out of Google, has successfully closed a $100 million Series B funding round, achieving a remarkable valuation of $1.3 billion. The investment was led by Battery Ventures and J2 Ventures, signaling strong investor confidence in the company's mission to revolutionize network communications. This capital infusion is set to accelerate the deployment of Aalyria's advanced platforms for orchestrating complex networks across space, air, sea, and land.


Orchestrating the New Space Economy

The modern space industry is characterized by a rapid increase in satellite launches, creating a complex and often fragmented communications landscape. Michael Brown of Battery Ventures noted that the success of services like SpaceX's Starlink has highlighted the need for network diversity and interoperability. Aalyria addresses this challenge by providing a seamless networking layer that enables different satellite platforms, including those in low and mid-earth orbit, to communicate and operate as a unified system.

At the core of this capability is Aalyria's Spacetime software, an intelligent orchestration platform that manages networks of networks. This system allows satellites, aircraft, and ground stations to form dynamic, self-healing networks that can adapt to changing conditions in real time. For instance, in the event of a natural disaster disabling ground infrastructure, Spacetime can re-route satellite coverage to the affected area within seconds, ensuring continuous connectivity.

A Legacy of Innovation from Google

Aalyria's technology has a distinguished pedigree, originating from Alphabet's ambitious Project Loon, which aimed to deliver internet access via high-altitude balloons. When the project was wound down, the founding team, led by CEO Chris Taylor and CTO Brian Barritt, acquired the technology to commercialize it. This foundation provides Aalyria with a mature and field-tested technological advantage, combining Taylor's national security expertise with Barritt's deep software engineering background.

Alongside its software, the company develops a hardware solution called Tightbeam, a laser-based communication system capable of transmitting data at speeds comparable to fiber optic cables. This technology, also developed at Google and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, enables high-bandwidth data transfer over distances exceeding 100 kilometers. Tightbeam is designed to be integrated with ships, aircraft, and other assets, creating robust nodes within the Spacetime-orchestrated network.

Fueling Strategic Expansion and Market Leadership

The company has already secured significant contracts and research funding from a host of prestigious government and commercial partners. Its client roster includes Telesat, the U.S. Air Force, NASA, the Defense Department's Defense Innovation Unit, and the European Space Agency. These partnerships underscore the critical need for Aalyria's solutions in both the defense and commercial sectors, validating its approach to network management.

With the new $100 million in capital, Aalyria plans to significantly scale its operations and accelerate product deployment. The company intends to increase its headcount of approximately 90 employees by over a third in the next year, focusing on engineering, product development, and customer support. CEO Chris Taylor stated the goal is to make space infrastructure as reliable and programmable as the internet itself, transforming isolated systems into a cohesive global network.


This substantial Series B funding round marks a pivotal moment for Aalyria, solidifying its position as a key innovator in the global communications and defense technology industries. By providing the critical software and hardware to unify disparate networks, the company is not just connecting assets but building an intelligent, resilient, and programmable internet for space. As constellations grow and data demands soar, Aalyria is well-equipped to define the future of dynamic, multi-domain network orchestration.
