Chai Discovery has raised $400 million in a Series C round to accelerate its artificial intelligence platform for molecular design. The financing values the San Francisco company at $3.8 billion as pharmaceutical groups increasingly explore AI tools to improve early-stage drug discovery. Chai plans to use the capital to advance its models, expand deployment, and help scientists design therapeutic molecules with greater speed and precision.


Investor Support

Index Ventures led the round, with Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, and Dimension also participating. New investors included Bain Capital Ventures, Battery Ventures, Baillie Gifford, BDT & MSD, Sapphire Ventures, and Avra Capital, while existing backers such as Thrive Capital, OpenAI, Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, and Oak HC/FT returned. The broad investor group reflects confidence in Chai’s technical progress and its ability to turn scientific research into a commercially relevant platform.

AI for Drug Discovery

Chai develops models that predict and reprogram interactions between biological molecules, enabling researchers to generate potential therapeutic structures from scratch. Its software is designed to make preclinical discovery more systematic, particularly for targets that conventional methods have struggled to address. The platform is already being used in partnerships with major pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly and Pfizer, giving Chai early exposure to real-world research programs.

The company’s latest model, Chai-3, is intended to improve the likelihood that designed molecules will bind successfully to their chosen biological targets. Chai said the model delivers higher target success rates and stronger binding affinity than its predecessor, including antibodies that attach more tightly to intended targets. Such gains could reduce the number of unsuccessful candidates entering laboratory testing, although further validation will be needed across broader drug development programs.

Building on Chai-2

Chai-3 follows Chai-2, which was released in 2025 as a zero-shot generative platform for fully de novo antibody design. According to the company, Chai-2 achieved double-digit experimental success rates without relying on an existing antibody template, representing a notable advance over earlier computational approaches. The rapid progression between the two systems highlights Chai’s focus on combining model development with laboratory testing and measurable biological performance.

Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Joshua Meier said AI-driven drug discovery is moving from promise toward active deployment. He said Chai’s models are helping partners create stronger molecular candidates, move faster against difficult targets, and pursue biological problems that traditional discovery techniques have found challenging. The new funding is expected to support wider adoption while allowing the company to continue improving the accuracy and capabilities of its technology.

Founding Team and Strategy

Chai Discovery was founded in 2024 by Joshua Meier, Jack Dent, Matthew McPartlon, and Jacques Boitreaud. The team brings experience from OpenAI, Meta FAIR, Stripe, molecular design, and academic research, combining software expertise with scientific knowledge. Its long-term goal is to replace more trial-and-error-based discovery with an engineering-led approach in which medicines can be designed more predictably.

Investors emphasized Chai’s technical speed, pharmaceutical partnerships, and early commercial traction, while Dimension described the financing as the largest check it has written. The company now has substantial resources to expand research, deepen integrations with life sciences organizations, and test whether its models can consistently produce viable therapeutic candidates. Success will depend on translating improved computational results into molecules that perform reliably in laboratories and eventually progress through clinical development.
