AI-powered molecular design firm Chai Discovery has announced a significant collaboration with pharmaceutical giant Novartis. The partnership aims to leverage artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of new therapeutic antibodies. This agreement highlights the growing trend of major biopharma companies integrating advanced AI to innovate their research and development pipelines.

Deepening a Strategic Partnership

Under the terms of the agreement, Novartis will gain access to Chai Discovery’s most advanced artificial intelligence models. This includes the company's latest Chai-3 model, which will be applied across multiple therapeutic programs. The primary focus of this integration is to enhance and expedite the discovery of novel antibodies for various disease targets.

This formal collaboration builds upon more than a year of close technical engagement between the two organizations. Novartis had previously received early access to Chai's next-generation molecular folding model last spring. The new agreement marks a significant expansion of their work, enabling broader deployment of Chai's AI across Novartis's research efforts.

Harnessing AI for Molecular Design

Chai Discovery specializes in using AI to predict and engineer molecular interactions with high precision. Their platform is designed to help scientists create new biomolecules that possess specific, predetermined properties. By generating novel molecular designs from scratch, the technology aims to significantly shorten traditional drug discovery timelines.

Fiona Marshall, President of Biomedical Research at Novartis, emphasized that AI is fundamentally reshaping medicine discovery. She noted that applying advanced models to antibody design allows for better, earlier decision-making on the most promising candidates. The collaboration brings together complementary expertise to tackle difficult targets and create new options for patients.

A Growing Force in AI-Driven Drug Discovery

Joshua Meier, co-founder and CEO of Chai Discovery, expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership with Novartis. He described the collaboration as a major step forward in expanding the application of AI-driven molecular design. This alliance will help apply their advanced technology to a wider range of important therapeutic programs.

This agreement with Novartis is the latest in a series of high-profile partnerships for the AI firm. Chai Discovery has previously announced customer agreements with pharmaceutical leaders Pfizer and Eli Lilly. While the strategic importance is clear, the specific financial terms of the Novartis deal have not been made public.

Founded in 2024, Chai Discovery is headquartered in San Francisco and was established by a team with experience from OpenAI and Meta. The company is backed by prominent investors, including Oak HC/FT, General Catalyst, and OpenAI. Its mission is to bring engineering-level precision to the development of therapeutics for challenging 'undruggable' conditions.

The collaboration between Chai Discovery and Novartis marks a pivotal moment in the application of AI to biopharmaceutical innovation. It signifies a deep commitment to leveraging computational power to solve complex biological challenges in drug discovery. Ultimately, this partnership aims to accelerate the development of new antibody therapies, potentially transforming patient care in the future.
