Carro has launched an asset-backed securitization facility worth S$450 million (about US$350 million), backed by receivables from Singapore car loans. The Singapore-headquartered automotive marketplace said the structure is the first of its kind for Singapore auto loan receivables and represents a key step in diversifying its long-term funding sources. The announcement highlights how Southeast Asia's used-car platforms are increasingly functioning as lenders with showrooms attached.

How the Securitization Works

The facility relies on a bankruptcy-remote special purpose vehicle approved under the Monetary Authority of Singapore's SPV regime. That vehicle purchases auto loan receivables originated by Genie Financial Services, Carro's wholly owned lending arm, and sells notes or attracts direct loans from investors. Carro receives cash today to support additional lending, while investors gain exposure to a stream of borrower repayments.

The COE Collateral Cushion

Carro's pitch leans on a distinctive feature of Singapore's car market: the Certificate of Entitlement, or COE, which licenses vehicle ownership. Because a car cannot be driven without a valid COE, the certificate retains residual value over its ten-year life and helps buyers and lenders price repossessed vehicles. However, COE premiums can swing sharply with quota supply and demand, and the value erodes over time, meaning investors are underwriting a cushion rather than a guaranteed floor.

Investor Safeguards and Market Realities

The program includes fraud-risk safeguards, automated data controls, and third-party calculation agents that prepare independent reports. Planned API integration is expected to allow real-time performance monitoring and tracking of transaction triggers such as rising arrears. These measures are not decorative, as the 2025 collapse of US subprime auto lender Tricolor showed how quickly asset-backed structures can fail when pool contents are not verified.

Funding Flexibility and Market Appetite

The facility can operate as a multi-funder structure, allowing lenders to participate through capital markets notes or direct loans on equal footing within the same vehicle. This flexibility matters because banks cautious about a new asset class can lend directly while bond investors buy notes. The move also fits a wider regional appetite for structured debt as private credit funds fill gaps left by traditional banks.

A Regional Lending Shift

The transaction reflects a broader evolution among Southeast Asia's used-car platforms into financing businesses. Ernest Chew, Carro's chief financial officer, said the company plans to diversify funding through bank loans, block discounting, and securitization. Rivals such as Carsome in Malaysia, Moladin in Indonesia, and Salmon in the Philippines have made similar moves, while US peers Carvana and CarMax regularly package auto loans into asset-backed securities.

Unanswered Questions and Regional Challenges

Carro has not named its funders, disclosed pricing, said whether the notes carry a credit rating, or shared delinquency data on the Genie Financial Services book. The S$450 million figure is a ceiling rather than cash in the bank, and the market will judge the deal by how much is drawn and at what cost. The greater test lies beyond Singapore, where markets such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia lack a COE-style mechanism and repossession is messier.

Carro operates in eight markets, including Australia following its acquisition of CarPlace, and transacted more than 120,000 new and used vehicles in its 2026 financial year. The company has said it is IPO-ready but will list only when conditions are favorable, and a securitization program that passes independent scrutiny could give public investors evidence of loan-book quality. For now, the facility positions Carro to pursue cheaper and more stable funding while testing whether its collateral story can travel beyond Singapore.
