Zoox Recalls Robotaxi Software After Vehicle Enters Smoky Fire Scene

Zoox, Amazon's autonomous vehicle subsidiary, has issued a software recall for its entire fleet of 105 robotaxis. The action follows a June incident where a vehicle failed to properly navigate a smoke-filled emergency scene in Las Vegas. This recall underscores the ongoing challenges self-driving cars face when encountering unpredictable, real-world situations involving first responders.


Incident Prompts Software Update

The event occurred on June 20 when an unoccupied Zoox vehicle encountered heavy smoke from an active fire scene that was not yet cordoned off. The robotaxi entered the smoke, braked abruptly while attempting to steer away, and came to a complete stop. A remote human operator had to intervene, manually reversing the vehicle away from the scene so emergency personnel could place traffic cones.

In its report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Zoox stated that its internal investigation found this to be an isolated event. The company engaged in discussions with the safety regulator about the incident's root cause before deciding to issue the recall. The fix is an over-the-air software update designed to enhance the vehicle's ability to detect and respond to heavy smoke.

Heightened Regulatory Oversight

This recall comes amidst increasing scrutiny from federal regulators over the interaction between autonomous vehicles and emergency services. Shortly after Zoox's decision, NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison issued a stern letter to AV developers. The directive highlighted a clear pattern of driverless vehicles interfering with law enforcement and other first responders across the industry.

Morrison's letter stated that an AV's inability to respond to emergency scenes represents a "functional insufficiency," not an extreme edge case. He called on companies to immediately focus their resources on resolving this critical safety issue. The letter emphasized that an AV that cannot safely interact with first responders poses a significant danger to the public.

An Industry-Wide Challenge

The problem of AVs impeding emergency personnel is not unique to Zoox. Alphabet's Waymo, a leader in the robotaxi space, has faced similar issues, with its vehicles blocking emergency vehicles or driving into active construction zones. These repeated incidents have prompted complaints from first responders and highlight a systemic challenge for the burgeoning autonomous driving sector.

This is also not the first time Zoox has had to recall its software to address safety concerns identified by regulators. The company previously issued updates to resolve issues related to hard braking and predicting the movement of other road users. These recalls illustrate the iterative process of refining autonomous technology as it encounters the complexities of public roads.

Zoox's Commercial Ambitions

Despite these setbacks, Zoox continues to push forward with its expansion plans, offering free rides in select areas of Las Vegas and San Francisco. The company, which Amazon acquired for $1.3 billion in 2020, is also testing its vehicles in several other U.S. cities. Its ultimate goal is to launch a commercial service using its purpose-built robotaxis that lack traditional controls like steering wheels or pedals.


The latest recall from Zoox serves as a critical reminder of the safety hurdles that must be overcome before autonomous vehicles can be widely deployed. While the software update addresses a specific failure, the incident highlights the broader need for AVs to master unpredictable emergency scenarios. Ensuring these vehicles can reliably and safely coexist with first responders remains a paramount challenge for the entire industry on its path to full commercialization.
