At Money20/20 in Las Vegas, World co-founder Alex Blania unveiled World ID for banking and finance, a new suite of technologies designed to help financial institutions create AI-safe experiences. The offering addresses internal and customer-facing systems, including interactions involving autonomous AI agents. Initial design partners include Bain Capital, OpenExchange, Outtake, Pantera Capital, and VanEck Funds.
The Rising Cost of AI-Enabled Fraud
Banking and finance face growing risks from synthetic media and deepfakes capable of fooling advanced approval systems. Deloitte predicts that AI-enabled fraud losses in the United States could reach US$40 billion by 2027, up from an estimated US$12.3 billion in 2023. In early 2024, an employee at engineering firm Arup wired approximately US$25.6 million after a video conference where every other participant was a deepfake.
Three Cryptographic Proofs for Financial Services
World ID for banking and finance introduces three cryptographic Proofs available through the World ID app. Proof of Human establishes that a person is real and unique after a one-time visit to an Orb, and Orbs are currently available at the NYSE. Proof of Presence provides a quick liveness check, while Proof of Attributes confirms specific facts from a government credential without revealing unnecessary personal information.
Applications Across Banking and Financial Services
Institutions can use these Proofs to confirm that a client or partner is a real human or to establish facts such as nationality or age without collecting documents or storing other personally identifiable information. The technology can be applied when a client opens a new account, visits a branch, or transfers a significant sum of money. Organizations can also deploy human-binding approvals for ACH and wire transfers and human-binding requirements for account recovery to help prevent account takeover.
Human Verification for High-Stakes Meetings
World ID for Zoom aims to protect sensitive conversations by proving that a real and unique human is present. A participant completes a one-time World ID verification at an Orb and connects the World ID app to Zoom, then confirms their identity with a live selfie before joining a call. Once authenticated, a Human Badge appears on the participant's Zoom tile, while Zoom does not receive personal information during the process.
Extending Proofs to Autonomous AI Agents
World ID also extends to agents through AgentKit, a suite of developer tools currently in beta that allows autonomous agents to use World ID Proofs. A person can delegate certain Proofs to an agent, enabling it to transact on their behalf while proving it acts at the behest of a real human. This approach may become a best practice as agents take on more financial tasks and compliance requirements grow.
Early Design Partners and Availability
Bain Capital, OpenExchange, Outtake, Pantera Capital, and VanEck Funds are initial design partners using the technology. The World ID app is available to download in the App Store and Google Play across more than 150 countries. More than 18 million people hold a Proof of Human, and institutions interested in integrating World ID can contact the company directly.
As AI agents and deepfakes become more common, financial institutions need reliable ways to verify that they are interacting with real humans without expanding their collection of personal data. World ID for banking and finance offers a practical set of tools for human, presence, and attribute verification across customer and internal workflows. Its early design partners and growing user base suggest that privacy-preserving human verification is becoming an essential layer for the next era of financial services.
