Malaysia’s government-backed investment company VentureTECH has invested in Hanan Medicare and AgriData Portal, supporting domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and technology-enabled agriculture. The agreements were formalized at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on October 13, 2026, with Deputy Economy Minister Mohd Shahar Abdullah in attendance. Neither the size of the investments nor the ownership stakes acquired was disclosed.
Two Investments Target National Priorities
The transactions target different industries but share an emphasis on building capabilities within Malaysia’s Bumiputera business community. Hanan Medicare plans to move further into complex biopharmaceutical production, while AgriData Portal is developing a connected system of financial and operational services for farmers. VentureTECH said both businesses have the potential to deliver economic benefits beyond their immediate commercial expansion.
The investments also align with the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan and the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035, which emphasize higher-value industrial development. VentureTECH’s officer-in-charge and chief operating officer, Nizam Mohd Reza, described the investments as part of a strategy centered on long-term domestic capabilities. He said the firm’s support includes operational development, talent, market access, and sustainable growth alongside capital.
Hanan Medicare Expands Into Biosimilars
Founded in 2014, Hanan Medicare has operated in pharmaceutical products and medical supplies, including oral solid dosage medicines. The company, chaired by Mohammad Sharif Abu Hassan and led by managing director Farshila Emran, began advancing into biosimilars in 2025. Its expansion focuses particularly on insulin, a technically demanding category that could help broaden Malaysia’s local manufacturing base for biologic medicines.
The investment follows previously disclosed plans for substantial manufacturing expansion, although the financial relationship between those projects and VentureTECH’s funding remains unclear. In June 2026, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority identified a proposed RM194.9 million Hanan Medicare project in Rawang involving biopharmaceuticals, insulin, and injectable products. A separate RM100 million project associated with Hanan Medicare-owned GoodScience targets generic medicines, including treatments in oncology.
Hanan Medicare acquired GoodScience in 2021, bringing additional pharmaceutical manufacturing experience into its wider operations. The move into biosimilars represents a step beyond conventional medicines because these products require specialized production processes and extensive quality controls. VentureTECH’s backing is intended to support that transition and contribute to a more resilient domestic medicine supply chain, reducing reliance on imported products.
AgriData Portal Scales Agriculture Platform in Sabah
VentureTECH’s investment in AgriData Portal is its first in Sabah, extending its presence into East Malaysia. Founded in 2020 by Matthew Johnny Kulai and Jun Kaih Wong, the agritech business works with smallholder farmers confronting uncertain financing, fragmented supply networks, and limited access to buyers. Its model combines digital infrastructure with practical agricultural support to address those interconnected barriers.
The company's platform has three linked services covering funding, farm productivity, and distribution. AG-FUND connects farmers with financing through financial institutions, AGRI-SPARK supports cultivation practices and farm development, and AG-MARKET facilitates access to purchasers and last-mile distribution. A proprietary Farm Management System connects those activities, giving the company a technology foundation for managing agricultural operations across its network.
The new capital is expected to support upgrades to that system and an expansion of AGRI-SPARK from three hubs to seven across Sabah. AgriData Portal also aims to grow its Sparkgrowers network to more than 120 participants, potentially increasing the reach of its services among local producers. These plans seek to raise farm productivity, strengthen market participation, and create more dependable income opportunities in rural communities.
Together, the investments illustrate VentureTECH’s approach to supporting domestic businesses in industries considered important to Malaysia’s long-term competitiveness. Hanan Medicare’s manufacturing expansion and AgriData Portal’s farmer-focused technology platform address separate challenges in healthcare supply and agricultural productivity. Their impact will depend on how effectively both companies execute their expansion plans, with the value and terms of VentureTECH’s commitments still undisclosed.
