Unicorn India Ventures has officially launched its United States operations, appointing former Google and Meta executive Kishore Kanakamedala as Venture Partner. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kanakamedala will lead the firm's strategic initiatives in the US and help Indian deep tech startups expand globally. The move follows strong US investor participation in the first close of the IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund I at ₹4.5 billion.

Strategic Expansion into the US

Kanakamedala will build a team of mid to senior operator investors who can develop ecosystems that benefit Unicorn India portfolio companies in the US. His mandate includes evangelizing the Indian deep tech growth story and cultivating an active co-investment ecosystem close to global technology innovation. The expansion is designed to help founders accelerate their scale-up and technology readiness level journey.

Leadership Experience and Product Background

Kishore brings more than three decades of product and business leadership from SAP, Google, and Meta. At Google, he grew the Local Ads product from under US$1 billion to more than US$4 billion in annual run-rate revenue, and later led Ads Analytics, Insights, and Measurement. He also served as Senior Director of Product Management at Meta and as COO of Neeva, which was acquired by Snowflake.

Mandate and Vision for Indian Deep Tech

Kanakamedala said the timing to invest in Indian deep tech is stronger than ever, citing product-based companies, proactive government policy, and accessible risk capital. He believes India is already emerging as a deep tech hub through its frugal innovation approach. His mandate is to invest in founders solving impactful deep tech problems and help portfolio companies enter the US market.

Investor Momentum and Fund Development

Unicorn India Ventures recently announced the first close of the IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund I at ₹4.5 billion, with substantial participation from US investors. Bhaskar Maumdar, Founder Managing Partner at Unicorn India Ventures, said the US launch was the next obvious step after closing the firm's third fund of ₹12 billion earlier this year. He added that the record speed of the first close reinforced the need for an experienced executive like Kanakamedala.

Why the US Market Matters

The United States remains the world's most influential market for enterprise software, AI, and deep tech adoption, making it a critical destination for Indian startups. Unicorn India Ventures wants to stay close to what it calls ground zero of global tech innovation while providing its founders with direct access to American customers and partners. This proximity is expected to shorten sales cycles and accelerate product validation for portfolio companies.

Portfolio Support and Next Steps

The US operations will focus on helping portfolio companies enter the American market, build local teams, and scale their go-to-market efforts. Kanakamedala will also act as a bridge for Indian investors seeking exposure to US technology trends and for American investors evaluating Indian deep tech opportunities. Over time, the firm expects these initiatives to strengthen its co-investment network and support the next generation of Indian unicorns.

Unicorn India Ventures has positioned its US launch as a decisive step toward building a stronger innovation corridor between the two countries. With an experienced operator at the helm and growing investor confidence in Indian deep tech, the firm is poised to help its portfolio companies compete on a global stage. The expansion signals a clear intent to convert India's frugal innovation strengths into durable, internationally recognized technology businesses.
