Terraton, a full-stack biochar platform for agribusiness operators, announced on October 20, 2026 that it has issued its first carbon removal credits and secured purchase agreements covering up to 97,240 tonnes of carbon removal. The credits were generated at EcoFix Kenya, a nut processor in Nanyuki, and independently issued by Isometric. The company also obtained US$1.5 million in debt financing from HSBC Ventures to support construction of additional facilities.

First Credits and Verification

The first credits come from the EcoFix Kenya facility, where Terraton made its final investment decision in August 2025, began producing biochar in May 2026, and received its first credits in October 2026. The facility runs on nut shells already collected through existing processing operations, so the biochar line required no change to the core business. The biochar is used as a key ingredient in high-quality compost, supporting farmers facing fertilizer and fuel supply disruptions, and it also raises soil pH to counter acidification in depleted tropical soils.

Terraton designed and financed the facility, installed the equipment and sensors, and deployed smart facility management software to collect production data. That information was sent to Offstream's digital monitoring, reporting, and verification platform, which ran accounting and quality checks before submitting thousands of data files to Isometric. David Armstrong, Partnerships Manager at Isometric, called the first certificates a major milestone and said the team is looking forward to working on Terraton's second project, Tupande.

Offtake Agreements and Buyer Commitments

Climeworks Solutions signed an offtake agreement covering 2,000 tonnes of committed purchases from EcoFix, with an additional 14,000 tonnes reserved from future Terraton production. Climate Impact Partners agreed to committed purchases from EcoFix, the upcoming Tupande facility in Kenya, and facilities still in development. Chris Walters, Sourcing Manager at Climate Impact Partners, said corporate demand for tech-based carbon removals is growing, while scaling supply remains a major challenge, and Terraton's approach adds valuable project development, financing, and operations capacity.

Terraton expanded its relationship with Terraset through a new seven-year offtake covering up to 14,000 tonnes from future facilities, with annual purchase volumes confirmed in advance. Through a partnership with Carbonfuture, Terraton will bring up to 32,500 tonnes of carbon removal to market through 2031 using Carbonfuture's trust infrastructure. The company also secured a purchase of 240 tonnes through CUR8, expanding its customer base to include a leading global consumer brand.

Financing and Growth Pipeline

Terraton secured US$1.5 million in debt financing from HSBC Ventures to fund facility development over the next two years. It is also developing a US$25 million pooled financing vehicle designed to support approximately 20 additional biochar facilities. Because every Terraton facility uses the same design, equipment, and reporting standards, the fund can underwrite facilities as a portfolio across operators and countries.

Helen Wang, VP of Climate & Deep Tech at HSBC Innovation Banking, said scaling carbon removal from biochar projects requires financing structures that support repeatable deployment. Terraton's next facility, built with Tupande, One Acre Fund's Kenyan brand, is already being commissioned in Sagana, Kenya. The company has signed 28 MOUs for future facilities, with more than 30 additional sites moving through the development pipeline across Africa, South America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Company Recognition and Background

Terraton was recently named one of ten winners of the World Economic Forum's UpLink Scaling Carbon Dioxide Removal Challenge, run with the Forum's First Movers Coalition. The company was founded in 2024 by entrepreneurs with exits to Salesforce and IDT Corporation and experience in global agriculture supply chains through Dandelion Chocolate. It raised US$11.5 million in Seed funding co-led by Lowercarbon Capital and Gigascale Capital.

Terraton's first issued credits and growing offtake commitments demonstrate that standardized biochar facilities can deliver verified carbon removal in emerging markets. By combining repeatable project design, financing, software, and carbon market access, the company aims to reduce development timelines and scale supply for corporate buyers. With its next facility already in commissioning and a pipeline of more than 30 sites, Terraton is positioning itself to expand biochar-based carbon removal across multiple regions.
