Tensive Secures €20 Million EIB Convertible Loan for Regenera Breast Implant

EIB financing to advance REGENERA toward EU approval, manufacturing scale-up and commercialisation

The European Investment Bank has committed up to €20 million in convertible venture debt to Milan-based Tensive, a clinical stage medical technology company. The financing is backed by the European Commission’s InvestEU programme and covers about half of the company’s €40 million development plan. It is intended to advance Tensive’s bioresorbable scaffolds for breast reconstruction and tissue marking after lumpectomy.


A Regenerative Approach to Breast Reconstruction

Tensive develops REGENERA and SOFTAG, patented off-the-shelf implants made from bioresorbable, biomimetic polymeric material. During a lumpectomy, the sponge-like scaffold is placed into the surgical cavity without manual size adjustment, allowing the patient’s own tissue to regrow and gradually replace the implant. The material is also clearly visible on diagnostic imaging, which can help target radiotherapy and monitor patients after surgery.

Clinical Evidence and Regulatory Momentum

In July 2026, the company reported 12-month data from its pivotal trial covering all 94 enrolled patients, with 87 patients exceeding twelve months and 30 completing 24 months of follow-up. Good-to-excellent cosmetic outcomes were recorded in 94.2 percent of evaluable cases at twelve months, and patient-reported breast satisfaction and cancer worry scores improved significantly. Tensive also announced five-year follow-up from its first-in-human study showing persistent volume replacement, vascularisation, gradual scaffold resorption and no capsule formation.

Financing Structure and Strategic Purpose

The EIB facility is a convertible loan drawable in two tranches of €8 million and €12 million, with a 20-year maturity from each drawdown date. It provides a less dilutive source of capital for approximately half of the €40 million required to complete development and launch REGENERA in the EU and United States. Tensive remains in active discussions with institutional investors, specialist global investors and potential strategic partners to secure the remaining amount.

Addressing a Clinical Stage Financing Gap

The EIB financing responds to a recognised gap for highly innovative clinical stage medtech companies, which often struggle to access long-term funding because of development risk, information asymmetries and limited traditional collateral. By extending Tensive’s financing runway, the operation is expected to support continued investment in research, clinical validation and regulatory activities. It may also help the company attract additional private capital.

Leadership Perspectives on the Investment

EIB Vice President Gelsomina Vigliotti said supporting European innovation in health, especially women’s health, is central to the EIB Group’s mission. She added that the operation, backed by InvestEU, strengthens Europe’s ability to develop high value medical technologies and create highly skilled jobs. Tensive Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Kakkar described the commitment as an anchor for ongoing equity financing and said the company is closer to offering a lasting solution to women with no viable reconstruction options.

European Medtech Funding Context

The Tensive announcement forms part of a broader wave of European medical device and regenerative technology financing. Recent adjacent activity reported by EU-Startups includes €20.5 million for Xeltis, €83 million for FineHeart, €20 million for SamanTree Medical and €13.6 million for ScreenPoint Medical. In Italy, Wearable Robotics raised €5 million for rehabilitation robotics, while Cellply secured €7.15 million for cancer and cell therapy analytical tools.


With EU regulatory approval for REGENERA anticipated as early as 2027, the EIB financing positions Tensive to move from positive clinical results toward market access. The support under InvestEU addresses a recognised financing gap for clinical stage medtech companies and may help attract additional private investment. If successful, the technology could give breast cancer patients a natural reconstructive option within the initial lumpectomy procedure.
