Swyftx, one of Australia's largest digital asset brokerages with over a million clients across four countries, has confirmed Andrea Yuen as its chief executive officer. The Brisbane-headquartered fintech also appointed Cathryn Lyall as permanent Chair, formalising leadership changes that began in April. The announcement marks a strategic step as the company transitions from a crypto-only platform into a broader regulated investment business.

Leadership formalised after interim period

Andrea Yuen joined Swyftx as Chief Financial Officer in January 2025 and was appointed interim co-CEO in April alongside co-founder Alex Harper. The board said its decision reflected her strong contribution over recent months and her suitability to guide the company through its next phase. Yuen brings more than 20 years of executive experience in national and global financial services.

Chair appointment brings extensive fintech experience

Cathryn Lyall, who became interim Chair in April, has now been appointed permanently to the role. She has held executive and non-executive positions at Deutsche Bank, the London Stock Exchange Group, the Chicago Board of Trade and CME Group. Lyall is also a partner at Seed Space Venture Capital and serves as a non-executive director at Wisr and Redbelly Network.

Regulatory milestones support broader strategy

Swyftx secured an Australian Financial Services Licence in July from the corporate regulator, enabling it to expand beyond digital assets. In the same month, it launched licensed leverage trading and became the first Australian cryptocurrency exchange to offer exposure to traditional assets alongside crypto. The company said it used a quiet period in the global crypto market to build regulatory foundations and diversify its product suite.

From crypto exchange to all-in-one investment app

Chair Cathryn Lyall said the market is changing rapidly with the advent of all-in-one investment apps. She noted that Swyftx is no longer a crypto-asset only platform and that Yuen's leadership experience across different APAC financial centres makes her an ideal candidate for the new era. This shift reflects the company's broader ambition to offer a wider range of regulated financial products.

Leadership comments highlight growth ambitions

Yuen said she is looking forward to leading Swyftx through its next stage as a regulated platform. She noted that the past year had been quiet for the global crypto market, allowing the business to focus on securing its licence and launching leverage trading and loans. Yuen added that Swyftx expects to become one of the country's largest fintechs by using blockchain technology to compete in investing and payments.

Co-founder steps back to board duties

Alex Harper, who co-founded Swyftx with Angus Goldman in 2018, will step down as acting co-CEO and resume his board duties as an executive director. Harper expressed confidence in Lyall's appointment, describing her understanding of digital assets and track record in regulated environments as crucial for the company's next phase. The leadership transition consolidates oversight under Yuen and Lyall while retaining the founders' strategic involvement.

Swyftx's confirmation of its chief executive and permanent chair positions signals a commitment to stronger governance as the company expands into regulated financial services. The leadership team aims to leverage blockchain technology to compete with traditional investment platforms across multiple markets. With more than one million clients and a new Australian Financial Services Licence, the fintech is positioning itself for its next stage of growth.
