Stryker, a global leader in medical technologies, and CMR Surgical, a global robotics company, have announced a strategic alliance designed to accelerate growth in the robotic assisted surgery market. The agreement combines CMR Surgical's Versius portfolio with Stryker's commercial scale, deep customer relationships, and market execution. Stryker will make an approximately US$400 million preferred equity investment in CMR Surgical and will serve as the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius portfolio.
Strategic Investment and Commercial Structure
Under the terms of the agreement, CMR Surgical will continue to lead portfolio development and commercialization in markets outside the United States. Stryker will act as the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius portfolio, while the preferred equity investment is intended to support future innovation and the global commercialization of the Versius platform. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Technology and Market Opportunity
Demand for robotic assisted surgery continues to grow, creating an opportunity for healthcare providers to expand programs with a scalable and practical solution. CMR Surgical's second generation robot supports a broad range of soft tissue procedures and has established clinical experience globally. Its modular architecture supports flexibility across procedures, surgeon access, and sites of care, helping providers grow adoption within existing operating room workflows.
Leadership Perspectives
Andy Pierce, Group President of MedSurg and Neurotechnology at Stryker, described soft tissue robotics as a high growth adjacency and a natural extension of Stryker's strengths in endoscopy, visualization, and enabling technologies. He said Stryker evaluated the segment carefully for years and selected CMR Surgical because of the opportunity to help providers grow robotic adoption across a broad range of procedures in hospitals and ASCs. The investment reflects a thoughtful and disciplined entry combining the complementary strengths of both companies.
Massimiliano Colella, Chief Executive Officer of CMR Surgical, called the alliance a significant milestone and a strong endorsement of the company's technology, clinical experience, and global business. He said Stryker's investment will give the company additional strength to accelerate innovation and continued global expansion, while its scale and customer relationships create a significant growth opportunity in the United States. Colella also welcomed Andy Pierce to the CMR Surgical board of directors.
Future Acquisition Option and Company Profiles
The agreement grants Stryker an exclusive option to acquire 100% of CMR Surgical's outstanding equity in the future, subject to the agreement's terms. Stryker is a global medical technologies company that impacts more than 150 million patients annually across MedSurg, Neurotechnology, and Orthopaedics. CMR Surgical, headquartered in Cambridge, United Kingdom, was founded in 2014 and is a private limited company backed by an international shareholder base.
The alliance signals a disciplined entry by Stryker into soft tissue robotics while providing CMR Surgical with additional capital and commercial reach. Together, the companies aim to make robotic minimal access surgery more accessible and affordable for surgeons, surgical teams, and hospital partners. The partnership is expected to support continued global adoption of the Versius portfolio and strengthen both companies' positions in robotic assisted surgery.
