Electric mobility firm Spiro has appointed seasoned automotive executive Auroasish Choudhuri as its new Managing Director for West and Central Africa. This strategic move is a key component of the company's ambitious expansion plans across the continent, significantly bolstered by a recent $270 million funding round. The appointment underscores Spiro's commitment to solidifying its leadership position within Africa's rapidly evolving and highly competitive electric vehicle market.
Strategic Leadership for Regional Growth
In his new capacity, Choudhuri will oversee Spiro's comprehensive mobility business throughout West and Central Africa, reporting directly to Mobility CEO Kaushik Burman. His primary responsibilities include reinforcing regional operations, expanding mobility services, and spearheading the company's preparations for upcoming market launches. This pivotal role is crucial as Spiro aims to translate its recent capital injection into tangible on-the-ground expansion and enhanced service delivery.
An Experienced Automotive Veteran
Choudhuri brings over two decades of distinguished international automotive industry experience to Spiro, with a career spanning Africa, Asia, and the Americas. He joins the company from DAG Industries, where he served as Chief Executive Officer managing operations in Nigeria and Benin. His extensive background also includes senior regional leadership positions at TVS Motor Company and Escorts Kubota, where he focused on international sales and market expansion.
Bolstering a Growing E-Mobility Ecosystem
Spiro is pioneering an integrated electric mobility ecosystem centered on its innovative battery-swapping technology for electric motorcycles. This system allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in minutes, effectively addressing critical charging-time challenges and making e-mobility practical for commercial use. The company currently operates over 130,000 motorcycles and has successfully completed more than 50 million battery swaps across its growing network.
A Company in Transformation
Choudhuri's appointment is part of a broader leadership restructuring following the company's significant fundraising success and strategic realignment. Spiro recently named former Indofast Energy CEO Anant Badjatya as its new Group CEO and appointed Huy Chieu as Chief Development Officer. This overhaul includes the acquisition of UK engineering firm Coexlion, signaling a deeper move into vehicle development, manufacturing, and supply chain control.
Vision for African Mobility
Anant Badjatya, Spiro's CEO, expressed confidence that Choudhuri's deep sector understanding and track record will be a strong asset for the company's scaling efforts. In a statement, Choudhuri noted that Africa is entering an exciting new phase in mobility transformation and that he is eager to apply his expertise. His leadership is expected to align Spiro's regional strategy with the unique transportation needs and energy infrastructure of West and Central African markets.
The appointment of Auroasish Choudhuri marks a pivotal moment for Spiro as it strategically deploys substantial new funding to accelerate its continental growth. With a newly strengthened leadership team and a clear focus on regional expansion, the company is well-positioned to deepen its impact on sustainable transportation. This decisive move positions Spiro to play a central role in shaping the future of electric mobility across West and Central Africa.
