Silicon Microgravity Limited (SMG), a Cambridge-based specialist in advanced semiconductor technologies, has successfully secured £6 million (€7.08 million) in a recent funding round. The investment, led by West Hill Capital, aims to accelerate the company's commercial expansion within the defence, space, and semiconductor industries. This capital injection will bolster SMG's position as a key provider of next-generation microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology.


Strategic Investment for Sovereign Capability

The funding round saw significant participation from the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund (UKI2S), which invested through both its Defence & Security and Space portfolios. This dual investment underscores the strategic importance of SMG's dual-use technology for the United Kingdom's national interests. Alexander Leigh of UKI2S highlighted that SMG represents a vital business for scaling the nation's sovereign capabilities in critical sectors.

Pioneering MEMS Technology

Originating as a spin-out from Cambridge University, SMG transforms sophisticated MEMS technology into practical solutions for navigation, aerospace, and geophysics. The company's proprietary systems are engineered to produce high-performance devices capable of withstanding extreme operating environments. This innovation is increasingly crucial for modern defence systems, satellite communications, and various autonomous operations where reliability is paramount.

SMG's technological focus is divided into two primary markets, addressing critical needs in advanced sensing. The first is inertial navigation, where its MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes offer superior accuracy and a smaller form factor at a lower cost than existing sensors. The second market is gravity sensing, for which the company provides robust and compact MEMS gravimeters for surveys and alternative navigation systems.

Applications and Commercial Traction

The company has already achieved significant commercial validation, with its technology being integrated into advanced space programs. SMG's MEMS accelerometers are currently utilized in applications ranging from launch vehicles and lunar exploration to satellite-enabled mineral exploration. This growing adoption by globally recognized customers was a key factor in attracting the new investment and demonstrates market confidence.

With the new capital, SMG plans to significantly scale its UK-based manufacturing capabilities and expand its engineering and semiconductor production capacity. Francis Neill, CEO of SMG, emphasized that the future of autonomous systems and space exploration relies on smaller, more accurate navigation technologies that can function without GPS. He stated that this investment enables the company to speed up the commercial deployment of its innovative solutions. The goal is to continue building a robust sovereign sensing capability within the United Kingdom for global applications.
