Siemens to Acquire Precision Innovations for AI-Powered Chip Design

Siemens has announced its agreement to acquire Precision Innovations, a move set to bolster its electronic design automation (EDA) software suite. This strategic acquisition integrates AI-powered chip planning capabilities into Siemens' portfolio, targeting the complex challenges of modern system-on-a-chip (SoC) development. The deal aims to empower semiconductor teams with tools for earlier and more efficient design exploration, optimizing for power, performance, and area.


Strategic Expansion into AI-Powered Chip Design

The acquisition brings Precision Innovations' specialized EDA software, which is built upon the open-source OpenROAD framework, into the Siemens ecosystem. This technology enables a "shift-left" approach, allowing engineers to assess architectural and design tradeoffs much earlier in the development cycle. Consequently, this early analysis helps reduce costly design iterations and accelerates the overall time to market for complex semiconductors.

Precision Innovations' platform is designed to help semiconductor teams evaluate design feasibility with greater accuracy and speed. By leveraging artificial intelligence, designers can explore numerous architectural possibilities before committing to a specific path. This proactive method leads to significant improvements in power, performance, and area, which are critical metrics for advanced chip designs.

Enhancing the EDA Portfolio

The integration of Precision Innovations is intended to significantly strengthen Siemens' Digital Design Creation software division. Its capabilities will complement Siemens' existing digital design and implementation solutions, creating a more comprehensive, end-to-end workflow for SoC development. This holistic approach will cover the entire process from initial architecture through to the full silicon lifecycle management.

Ankur Gupta, executive vice president at Siemens EDA, highlighted the acquisition's importance in addressing increasing SoC complexity. He stated that incorporating AI-powered early design exploration will significantly accelerate time to silicon and improve key performance metrics. This move underscores Siemens' commitment to providing customers with tools to explore new architectures more efficiently.

Tom Spyrou, CEO of Precision Innovations, expressed enthusiasm about joining Siemens, noting it will allow the company to scale its technology. He emphasized that the partnership will bring AI-driven chip planning to a much broader audience of semiconductor design teams. The shared goal is to empower designers to focus their innovation on the most impactful areas by evaluating thousands of options early.
