Global software giant SAP has announced its acquisition of Prior Labs, a German-founded frontier AI company specializing in technology for structured enterprise data. The deal is supported by a commitment of over €1 billion from SAP to fund infrastructure, hiring, and long-term research. This strategic acquisition positions SAP to lead in a crucial area of enterprise AI that moves beyond large language models.

Pioneering AI for Structured Data

Prior Labs has distinguished itself by developing tabular foundation models (TFMs), a novel category of AI designed specifically for the structured data that underpins global business operations. Unlike traditional methods that require building a separate model for each dataset, Prior Labs' TabPFN technology uses a single pre-trained model. This approach significantly reduces the time and expertise needed for tasks like demand forecasting, customer churn prediction, and supplier risk analysis.

The company's technology has already demonstrated its value across various industries and research fields, with over four million downloads of its models. Hitachi uses the models to help prevent train failures, while financial institution TD applies them to improve forecasting. The technology has also been utilized in hundreds of research projects, from pancreatic cancer diagnosis to the development of next-generation battery materials.

Fostering Innovation Through Strategic Autonomy

Under the terms of the acquisition, Prior Labs will continue to operate as an independent research lab, retaining its own brand, leadership, and research agenda. The company will also maintain its existing customer relationships and its commitment to publishing research and making models openly available. This structure ensures the 18-month-old startup can preserve its innovative culture while leveraging SAP's substantial resources.

The significant investment from SAP provides Prior Labs with the stability to pursue ambitious, multi-year research programs previously beyond its reach. Frank Hutter, Co-founder and CEO of Prior Labs, noted that the company is entering a new chapter with the resources to tackle more complex problems. He emphasized that SAP is uniquely positioned to provide the data environments and long-term investment needed to advance TFMs.

A Vision for the Future of Enterprise AI

The collaboration grants Prior Labs access to SAP’s extensive enterprise data ecosystem, creating a powerful environment for developing next-generation foundation models. The company plans to expand its research into more advanced areas, including scientific discovery, causal reasoning, relational data, and agentic systems. These initiatives aim to unlock deeper insights from the complex, interconnected data that businesses rely on for critical decisions.

Philipp Herzig, CTO of SAP, highlighted the strategic importance of this focus, stating that the greatest untapped opportunity in enterprise AI lies in structured data. He expressed confidence that combining Prior Labs' frontier model research with SAP's enterprise data and customer reach will establish them as global leaders in this category. This move signals a clear intention to integrate powerful, specialized AI directly into core business workflows worldwide.

This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for both SAP and Prior Labs, representing a major investment in the European AI landscape. By empowering a specialized research lab to innovate independently, SAP strengthens its position in enterprise AI while championing a new frontier beyond text-based models. The partnership is set to accelerate the development of powerful tools that extract actionable intelligence from the structured data driving the global economy.
