UK-based edtech startup Sainaptic has raised £1 million in fresh funding to expand its AI-assisted assessment marking technology. The round was co-led by Cornerstone VC and Ufi Ventures, with participation from Elm Venture Partners and Brighteye Ventures. The investment will support the company as it works to modernize how vocational and professional qualifications are marked across the United Kingdom.

Funding and Growth Plans

The new capital will help Sainaptic expand its product offering beyond marking and feedback into quality assurance, analytics, and personalized assessments. The funding will also support the growth of the company's engineering, product, and sales teams. Cornerstone VC and Ufi Ventures co-led the round, while Elm Venture Partners and Brighteye Ventures also joined the investor group.

Investor and Market Context

The participation of Cornerstone VC, Ufi Ventures, Elm Venture Partners, and Brighteye Ventures highlights sustained interest in edtech solutions that address workforce training needs. Vocational and professional qualifications play a critical role in preparing learners for employment, yet assessment bottlenecks can slow progression. Sainaptic's approach targets this gap by combining AI with human expertise across large-scale apprenticeship programs.

Founders and Core Technology

Sainaptic was founded by Cambridge-trained educators and data scientists Kavitha Ravindran and Rajeshwari Iyer. The company develops AI-powered tools that help exam boards and training providers assess vocational and professional qualifications. These qualifications frequently include short answers, essays, reports, presentations, and professional discussions rather than multiple-choice questions, which demands careful evaluation.

Assessment Challenges

Marking this type of work requires trained professionals and can take up to 90 minutes per assessment, which creates significant operational burdens. This slows learner feedback, delays certification, and postpones entry into employment while increasing costs for assessment providers. Sainaptic's tools are designed to reduce marking time without sacrificing accuracy or consistency.

Efficiency and Accuracy Gains

According to Sainaptic, its AI models have reduced marking times for some qualifications from 45 minutes to 8 seconds. The company also reports potential annual savings of up to £150,000 for assessment providers. In addition, the technology shows less than 1% deviation from expert assessors and near-perfect accuracy in grades awarded for work-based skills assessments.

Partnership with Skilltech Solutions

The funding announcement was made alongside a new partnership with Skilltech Solutions, an assessment management software provider. This collaboration will make Sainaptic's technology available to some of the UK's largest apprenticeship assessment organizations. It pairs Sainaptic's AI models with Skilltech's assessment delivery platform and established industry relationships to support AI-assisted portfolio marking.

Rollout and Product Roadmap

The initial joint offering will focus on portfolio evaluation across selected apprenticeship standards. It has the potential to expand into broader quality assurance and assessment processes over time, while qualified assessors remain responsible for final decisions. The combined solution is expected to become available to participating apprenticeship assessment organizations in the first quarter of 2027.

Broader Product Vision

Beyond the Skilltech partnership, Sainaptic plans to use the funding to develop quality assurance tools, analytics capabilities, and personalized assessment features. These additions are intended to support assessment providers with more comprehensive evaluation workflows. The company's long-term vision includes a broader range of services that complement its existing marking technology.

The £1 million funding round signals growing investor confidence in AI-enabled tools for vocational assessment. Through its partnership with Skilltech Solutions and its expansion into quality assurance and analytics, Sainaptic aims to shorten assessment timelines while preserving accuracy and human oversight. As the joint solution reaches the market in 2027, the company could help more learners move efficiently toward certification and employment.
