German venture capital firm Redstone has announced the launch of its second regional fund, the North Karelia Growth Fund II, with a total commitment of €10 million. This new vehicle builds upon the success of its predecessor established in 2020, continuing the firm's strategy of investing in promising early-stage companies. The fund will target key technology sectors to foster innovation and economic vitality within the North Karelia region of Finland.
Building on Regional Success
The first fund successfully invested in 17 early-stage companies, significantly contributing to their international expansion. A notable portfolio company is the Joensuu-based airship manufacturer Kelluu, which recently secured a €15 million funding round led by the NATO Innovation Fund. Kelluu's CEO, Janne Hietala, credited the fund's early, locally present support as instrumental in establishing the company's strong growth trajectory.
Kaj Hagros, Managing Partner at Redstone Nordics Oy, highlighted the region's matured ecosystem and the depth of local expertise as key motivators for the new fund. He noted that partners such as Business Joensuu have been pivotal in creating stronger conditions for new growth companies to emerge. This proven potential, combined with a sharp focus on generating returns, provided a clear rationale for launching a second vehicle.
Strategic Investment Focus
Over the next five years, North Karelia Growth Fund II is set to invest in approximately 15 to 20 early-stage growth companies based in or building a significant presence in the region. Initial investment tickets will range from €100,000 to €300,000, with additional capital reserved for follow-on investments in the strongest performers. The fund's primary focus areas include semiconductors, photonics, defence and dual-use technologies, and solutions supporting the energy transition.
The fund operates with a dual mission to deliver competitive financial returns to its investors while simultaneously bolstering the economic vitality of North Karelia. This strategic approach ensures that financial success is directly linked to tangible regional development and job creation. By nurturing local talent and innovation, the fund aims to strengthen the area's entire business landscape for the long term.
Strong Local Backing and Commitment
The fund is supported by a consortium of committed local investors, many of whom are returning after participating in the first fund. Key backers include the City of Joensuu, Broman Group, the University of Eastern Finland, LähiTapiola Itä, and OP North Karelia. Their continued commitment signals strong confidence in Redstone's strategy and the region's significant innovative potential.
Local leaders have praised the initiative, with Joensuu's Mayor, Jere Penttilä, stating that such long-term commitment strengthens the conditions for growth and new jobs across North Karelia. Harri Broman, Chair of the Board of Broman Group, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of directing capital and expertise to local entrepreneurs. This widespread support underscores the fund's integral role in the community.
Navigating the European Venture Landscape
The fund's launch occurs amid a broader expansion of specialized European venture vehicles targeting similar high-growth technology sectors. Billions in new capital have recently been announced for DefenceTech, DeepTech, and energy transition funds across the continent. This trend highlights a significant investor shift towards critical industries that are shaping the future of technology and security.
In contrast to larger pan-European vehicles, North Karelia Growth Fund II employs a more geographically concentrated and hands-on strategy. It provides crucial early-stage capital to a specific regional ecosystem that might otherwise be overlooked by larger players. This targeted approach is designed to cultivate local innovation from the ground up, creating a powerful and sustainable impact.
The launch of Redstone's North Karelia Growth Fund II marks a significant and strategic investment in the region's technological future. With a €10 million commitment, a clear focus on high-potential sectors, and robust local backing, the fund is well-positioned for success. It promises not only to accelerate the growth of promising startups but also to drive lasting regional prosperity and innovation.
