Melbourne fintech RedOwl has closed a Seed funding round of A$5.3 million, led by Tidal Ventures at a pre-money valuation of A$38.4 million. The company is building an intelligence and governance platform that helps large enterprises detect and prevent margin leakage across supplier costs, customer revenue, and business spending. Earlier investor CP Ventures also participated in the round, which will support product development, customer expansion, and partner-led growth in Australia and international markets.

Purpose and Market Challenge

Margin leakage often starts with an invoice priced above a contracted rate, a service delivered but never billed, or spending outside company policy. RedOwl's thesis is that these issues share a root cause: financial decisions are made without full context of what an organization has agreed, authorized, and previously decided. Industry research highlights the risk, with Deloitte estimating an average loss of 8.6% of expected contract value and The Hackett Group reporting 60% less savings leakage for leading procurement organizations.

How the Platform Works

RedOwl positions its technology as an intelligence layer above existing systems of record. It combines organizational memory, including contracts, policies, rate cards, approvals, and previous decisions, with contextual reasoning to assess the intent of a transaction. The goal is to help responsible people act on evidence before payment, when finance teams can still check details, fix problems, or stop a transaction.

Founding Story and Investor View

Co-founders Jitto Arulampalam and Thushan Shanmugarajah started RedOwl after seeing the limits of retrospective financial controls. Arulampalam had been exposed to significant invoice fraud that existing systems and audit processes did not catch, while Shanmugarajah identified how it occurred through forensic finance work. Kieran O'Neill, Principal at Tidal Ventures, said the investment aligns with Tidal's Systems of Work thesis that software should not only record activity but actively help carry out business processes.

Partnerships and Customer Traction

RedOwl has reached Amazon Web Services independent software vendor Accelerate status and is available through AWS Marketplace. Its relationship with Mastercard began in 2024 through Mastercard Start Path, and the two companies have since worked on applying transaction-level governance to commercial payments. The company has secured customers including ASX 200 listed organizations Aussie Broadband and Vicinity Centres, with both exploring AI to strengthen financial controls and supplier engagement.

Future Direction

The company also sees a future where AI not only monitors spending and governs payment decisions but also initiates purchases and executes transactions on behalf of businesses. RedOwl aims to connect these agents to payment rails with governance built in, enabling them to act on approved business intent within authorized boundaries. For CFOs, this creates a pathway to more autonomous business-to-business payments while preserving control, human accountability, and a clear record of each decision.

With the new Seed funding, RedOwl plans to further develop its platform, expand across more large enterprises, and grow through banking, payments, and cloud partners. The company's focus on continuous transaction governance addresses a significant source of value loss for organizations managing complex supplier and customer relationships. By shifting financial control from retrospective review to pre-payment intelligence, RedOwl is positioning itself to support more informed, accountable, and efficient payment decisions.
