Ossprey, a UK-based startup focused on software supply chain security, has successfully raised $2.65 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round. The investment, led by Episode 1 Ventures with participation from Osney Capital and Octopus Investments, will fuel the company's mission to secure modern software development. This funding addresses the growing risks associated with the increased use of open-source code in an era of AI-accelerated programming.

Addressing a Modern Security Challenge

The modern software landscape is built upon a foundation of open-source components, with approximately 90 percent of enterprise applications relying on them. This dependency creates a significant attack surface, which malicious actors are increasingly exploiting. Attackers now embed harmful code within trusted packages, allowing them to infiltrate systems through standard development workflows.

The advent of AI coding assistants has dramatically increased the pace and volume of code entering production environments. This acceleration amplifies the security challenge, as teams integrate more third-party dependencies than ever before. Consequently, the need for robust, real-time security measures has become paramount for organizations aiming to innovate safely.

A Proactive Detection Approach

Ossprey distinguishes itself from traditional security tools by moving beyond reactive, signature-based scanning. Such methods are limited to identifying known vulnerabilities, or CVEs, leaving a gap for novel threats to exploit. The company's platform is designed to detect malicious packages the first time they appear, before they are officially documented.

The platform continuously scans open-source ecosystems to flag malicious code before it ever reaches a developer's machine. This proactive stance prevents exploits from being integrated into a company's software from the outset. "We founded Ossprey because existing approaches weren't designed for the pace modern engineering teams now operate at," stated CEO Nate Dunning.

Investor Confidence and Strategic Vision

The $2.65 million pre-seed round, one of the largest for a UK cybersecurity company to date, highlights strong investor confidence in Ossprey's solution. The oversubscribed round demonstrates the market's recognition of the critical problem the company is solving. This capital will enable Ossprey to further develop its technology and expand its operational reach.

Millan Suri, Principal at lead investor Episode 1, praised the company's unique capabilities and experienced team. "Our detection engine catches what signature-based tools miss, and it does that because the team behind it has actually lived the problem from the inside," Suri noted. This endorsement underscores the value of Ossprey's specialized focus on preventing malicious code injection.

Future Growth and Expansion

With this new capital, Ossprey plans to execute an ambitious international expansion strategy. The company will initially focus on growing its presence across the United Kingdom before extending its reach into Europe and North America. Its primary targets are enterprise-level organizations that are building and deploying software at a significant scale.

The company is already preparing for its next stage of growth, with plans for a larger funding round within the next year. This forward-looking strategy aims to solidify its market position and continue its technological innovation. The immediate goal is to help organizations eliminate the difficult choice between shipping software quickly and ensuring it is secure.

Ossprey's successful pre-seed funding marks a significant step forward in addressing the evolving threats to the software supply chain. By providing a proactive solution tailored to the speed of AI-driven development, the company is well-positioned for substantial growth. This investment empowers Ossprey to help enterprises innovate confidently, ensuring security keeps pace with the rapid evolution of software creation.
