Berlin-based travel platform Omio has secured a $10 million (€8.7 million) strategic investment to accelerate its expansion across Asia. The funding from Granite-Integral will fuel growth in Japan and strengthen its foothold in the burgeoning Southeast Asian travel market. This move underscores Omio's commitment to simplifying complex, multimodal journeys for a global audience in a rapidly growing region.

Strategic Investment for Asian Growth

The investment comes from Granite-Integral, a joint venture between Granite Asia and Integral Corporation. These funds are designated to enhance Omio's transport network and partnerships throughout Japan and Southeast Asia. The capital injection is timed to capitalize on the resurgence of international travel and the demand for integrated booking solutions.

Naren Shaam, Founder and CEO of Omio, highlighted the immense potential of the Japanese market, which attracts millions of visitors. He noted that planning journeys across different operators can be complex, especially outside major metropolitan areas. This partnership aims to usher in a new era of connected travel, making exploration simpler for everyone.

Leveraging Local Expertise and Technology

The collaboration with Granite-Integral extends beyond financial backing, providing Omio with invaluable regional travel and technology expertise. This support will be instrumental in deepening engagement with local transport operators and other key business partners. Leveraging this local knowledge allows Omio to better tailor its offerings to the specific needs of the Asian market.

As part of its expansion, Omio plans to grow its regional teams, particularly in Japan and at its technology center in Singapore. The Singapore hub is crucial for innovation, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence and platform development. This investment in local talent demonstrates a long-term commitment to building a robust presence in the region.

Building on Recent Momentum

This funding builds upon strong momentum for the company, which entered the Japanese market earlier this year. Omio has already reported significant booking demand from international travelers along the popular Golden Route and to more remote destinations. This early success validates the market need for a comprehensive, easy-to-use travel platform in the country.

The move into Asia is part of a broader global growth strategy that includes both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions. This investment follows Omio's recent agreement to acquire Rail Europe and its past purchase of Rome2Rio. These actions position Omio as a major consolidator in the multimodal travel distribution space.

The Future of Connected Travel in Asia

CK Choun, co-Head of Granite-Integral, expressed confidence in Omio's ability to capture long-term opportunities in the region. He emphasized the growing demand for connected journeys and praised Omio's platform for simplifying fragmented travel experiences. The partnership reflects a shared vision for the future of travel in Japan and Southeast Asia.

Looking forward, Omio has set an ambitious goal to operate in more than 70 markets worldwide by 2028. The expansion into Japan and Southeast Asia represents a key priority within this international growth strategy. The company will continue to add transport partners, such as Japan Railways and Willer Express, to its network.

This $10 million investment marks a pivotal moment for Omio, strengthening its position in the competitive Asian travel market. By combining strategic capital with local expertise, the company is well-equipped to address the region's fragmented transport landscape. Ultimately, this expansion reinforces Omio's core mission to create a more connected and accessible travel ecosystem for customers worldwide.
