British defence technology startup Mutable Tactics has successfully closed a $2 Million pre-seed funding round to advance its AI software for drone operations. The round, led by Seraphim Space, will fuel the development of a system designed to coordinate drone fleets in complex battlefield environments. This technology aims to solve the critical challenge of operating unmanned systems when communication is unreliable or completely lost.


Addressing a Critical Battlefield Bottleneck

Modern defence forces deploy numerous unmanned systems, but their effectiveness is often hampered by a significant operational constraint. The prevailing model requires one human operator to control a single drone, creating a bottleneck limited by human attention. This limitation becomes especially critical in contested environments where disrupted communications can render centrally controlled drones ineffective.

An AI-Powered Decision Layer

Mutable Tactics addresses this issue with its innovative AI-powered "decision-layer" software, which acts as an intermediary between a commander and the drones. The system translates high-level mission objectives into locally executable actions for an entire fleet of unmanned systems. This allows mixed groups of drones to operate as a coordinated team rather than as individually piloted platforms.

This approach facilitates scalable human-machine teaming, enabling a single operator to supervise multiple autonomous systems simultaneously. Decisions are made at the tactical edge, allowing drones to adapt to changing conditions and coordinate with each other without constant connectivity. The result is a more resilient and effective deployment of unmanned assets in complex operational scenarios.

A core principle of the technology is maintaining meaningful human control at all times. Military commanders retain ultimate authority by setting mission parameters, rules of engagement, and operational constraints. Strategic Investment and Future Plans

The $2 Million investment was led by space-tech specialist Seraphim Space, with significant participation from the UK’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund and others. This funding underscores the strategic importance of developing resilient autonomous systems for modern military applications. The investors recognize the unique blend of battlefield experience and robotics expertise within the founding team.

Mutable Tactics will use the capital to expand its Cambridge-based engineering team and accelerate the software's development cycle. A key focus will be on validating the technology in collaboration with two European governments under realistic operational conditions. The funding also supports integration with partner systems and preparations for live demonstrations in demanding environments.

Maureen Haverty, Principal at Seraphim Space, highlighted the software's relevance for modern conflicts that are often jammed and GPS-denied. She noted that the system allows low-cost drones to operate as coordinated teams when communications degrade. This provides operators with faster decisions and better outcomes without requiring expensive hardware upgrades across the board.


The successful funding round positions Mutable Tactics to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of modern defence forces. By breaking the one-to-one link between operators and drones, the company's AI offers a scalable and resilient solution for complex missions. This advancement is a crucial step forward for both military autonomy and the broader field of robotics.
